BE AWARE OF 3RD PARTY SCAMS
The Big Spring Police Department has worked on a couple cases where large items are purchased through social media. The victims in these cases are buying and paying for large items such as sea containers or storage buildings and they are being delivered. Victims are informed that items such as these are deeply discounted. Suspects act as a type of 3rd party business and set up the purchase with a certified business. Once payment is received, the “purchased” product is delivered but payment is never received by the actual certified business. The 3rd party can then no longer be reached as they disappear with the victim’s payment and the victim is left to deal with the certified business who is then attempting to repossess the “purchased” product or request full payment. Please make sure you verify and directly contact the vendor themselves. These types of scams have been frequented on social media such as Facebook Marketplace.
IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT’S BECAUSE IT IS!!

The Big Spring Police Department has recently received multiple reports of counterfeit/prop currency being used during cash transactions. We encourage all individuals and businesses that accept cash as a form of payment to educate and train themselves and/or their employees on how to recognize counterfeit bills. Taking a few extra seconds to inspect currency can help protect your business and prevent financial loss.
💵 FAKE OR REAL? Could You Tell the Difference?
Counterfeit money can end up anywhere—from garage sales and local businesses to online marketplace transactions. Taking just a few seconds to check your cash can save you from a costly mistake.
Pictured below are a few counterfeit bills received by the Police Department this week alone.

Tips to keep you or your business from being a victim:
• Examine the currency prior to finalizing the transaction.
• Feel the paper – Genuine U.S. currency is printed on a unique cotton and linen blend that feels different from regular paper.
• Raised printing – Run your finger across the portrait or lettering. Authentic bills have slightly raised ink.
• Security thread – Hold the bill up to the light to see the embedded security strip. It glows a specific color under UV light depending on the denomination.
• Watermark – Look for the faint image that matches the portrait when held up to the light.
• Color-shifting ink – On newer bills, the numeral in the lower right corner changes color when you tilt the bill.
• Micro-printing – Tiny printed words around the portrait and borders should be crisp and readable with magnification.

🚫 If you think a bill is counterfeit:
• If prior to the transaction occurring, do not accept the bill(s).
• Try to identify the subject or make notes of the identifiers of the subject and vehicle who is attempting to pass the counterfeit bills.
• Keep it separate from other cash.
• Contact your local law enforcement agency and report it.

🇺🇸 FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS SAFETY REMINDER 🇺🇸

As we celebrate our nation's independence, the Big Spring Police Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.

Please remember that the use, sale, and possession of fireworks within the City of Big Spring are prohibited under Section 24-1 of the Big Spring Code of Ordinances. These regulations are in place to help protect our community from preventable fires, injuries, and property damage.

The safest way to celebrate is by leaving the fireworks to the professionals. We invite everyone to join us for Pops in the Park on Friday, July 3, and enjoy a spectacular fireworks display over the beautiful Comanche Trail Park Amphitheater.

Let's work together to keep this Independence Day safe for our families, neighbors, first responders, and pets.

🇺🇸 Have a safe and happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸
