s, coyotes, mountain goats and an occasional wolf to call this country home, as well as many smaller mammals, eagles, hawks and lots of songbirds. We are privileged to ride across several good neighbors; coupled with our own land, there are countless miles of riding available. Our guests are welcome to take an active a part as they like in all phases of ranch life from feeding pigs to moving cows and wrangling horses. To insure everyone an opportunity to really enjoy the ranch, we take a limited number of guests. Come enjoy our special life and experience the friendly charm of the Sweet Grass Ranch.

It’s a family tradition 🤍

This winter, Shelly’s sister Barbie and their dad, Spike, were inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame. Spike was a Montana horseman who loved nothing so much as the partnership he had with his horses, the land he raised them on, and the family he shared it all with. Barbie is an acclaimed photographer, one of the original and enduring documentarians of the American West. Her work has chronicled both the changes in and the things that stay the same about the western lifestyle. A documentary about her life and work, by is currently on the film festival circuit and will soon be available to stream! We are so proud of Barbie and honored to share in the legacy that she, Shelly, and Spike built 🤍

From August 23rd to 29th, join us for an immersive experience in ranch life — horseback riding, mountain views, good food,

This is not a highly structured retreat or workshop. Instead, the experience is built around the idea that clarity often comes organically when we step away from our normal environment and spend time in nature, around horses, and with a small group of thoughtful, supportive women.

10 years ago, .for.r.e.a.l was in the same position as you: at a turning point in life, and seeking a path forward. At Sweet Grass, she rediscovered a sense of self that had been buried for years. Now, she’s coming back to host this retreat, to be a companion and guide for other women, to serve as a listening ear and grounding voice. She designed this retreat not so that you can escape your life, but so you can step away long enough to see it clearly again.

No horseback riding experience is necessary! We will work with you wherever you’re at to make this week one of connection, confidence, and peace.

🐎 Calling all horseback adventure enthusiasts! Are you an intermediate or advanced rider who loves the outdoors? Have you always dreamed of a week of intense, thrilling, rewarding riding that allows you the opportunity to challenge yourself, see some of the most pristine landscapes left on earth, and make life-changing bonds with humans and horses alike? If you answered yes, we have just the experience for you!

🌄 Introducing: The 100-Mile Adventure Package! For the week of August 2nd — August 9th, 2026, we are offering a bucket list ride of epic proportions.

🏕️ There are many types of dude ranches and pack trips, but this is something unique. We will cover roughly 100 miles and climb thousands of feet in the most stunning terrain imaginable. Our route will take you across the sweeping plains the West is known for, through narrow valleys carved by glaciers, up ridges dense with pine trees, over tumbling turquoise rivers, to truly breathtaking mountain bowls and alpine lakes. This trip includes three nights in rooms at our historic dude ranch, one night at our sister ranch, and two nights camping in canvas wall tents or beneath the stars in the Crazy Mountains of Montana. You will have the chance to build trust and partnership with our fantastic horses, ride at all paces/gaits, swim in crystalline waters (alone or with your horse!), fish for trout, hike through rock slides, cook over campfires, watch the sun set over mountain peaks, and stargaze in a land untouched by human light pollution but rich with the light of the Milky Way.

This package is specifically tailored to experienced horse people seeking an authentic riding excursion in the wilds of Montana. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, but fun is 100% guaranteed! If you come with an appetite for adventure, we promise you will leave fuller than you could ever have imagined.

Hellooo & Happy 2026! 🧚🏼‍♀️ We have noticed a definite increase in the amount of daylight in the last couple of weeks, which means we are sneaking towards summer. In just a few short months we’ll be back to mornings of purple mountain sunrises, steaming hot coffee, and horses in every shade of the rainbow 🌈

These pictures from last winter show a liiiittle more snow than we have currently. It’s been a windy couple of weeks here in Melville, so we don’t have much snow on the ground but, so far, no ponies have been blown away. We hope that whatever your weather is wherever you are, you’re still able to enjoy some cozy December cheer! 🌟

Our guest demographics at Sweet Grass really run the whole spectrum. We get people who have never ridden before, we get vacation riders, and we get professional riders. We get individuals and couples and families and girls’ trips and we sometimes get whole barns. Last summer, we were lucky enough to have a group of fox hunters from Virginia! They were led by the one and only — the owner of Hunter’s Rest Stables — and corralled by their steadfast organizer 🏇🏼. The Hunter’s Rest group knew what they wanted (I know they’ll smile at me saying that), and we tried our best to make sure they got it! In return, they were one of the most fun and wild groups of the season. From a surprise proposal while moving cows to a pack trip into the mountains to a surprise bachelorette party to some feisty crow hopping during the barrel racing to daily yoga classes and dance parties to TWO surprise weddings, it was a jam packed week of adventure and laughter and love. We are so fortunate to be able to do what we do, and are forever grateful to groups like Hunter’s Rest for reminding us all of the magic of Sweet Grass 💙
