🚩Due to dry conditions, high winds, and low humidity, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of northwest, west central, and southwest Minnesota today, May 12.

Counties under the Red Flag Warning include Big Stone, Blue Earth, Brown, Chippewa, Clay, Cottonwood, Faribault, Grant, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Lac Qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Marshall, Martin, McLeod, Meeker, Murray, Nicollet, Nobles, Norman, Otter Tail, Pipestone, Polk, Pope, Redwood, Renville, Rock, Sibley, Stevens, Swift, Traverse, Watonwan, Wilkin, and Yellow Medicine.

When a Red Flag is in effect:
❌Don’t burn large piles of vegetative debris, like leaves or slash.
👀Check any recent burning to ensure the fire is out COLD! ⚠️Campfires are strongly discouraged. If you do have a campfire, it should be contained, small, always supervised, and put out COLD before you leave.

Be safe with ANY heat source that could cause a spark. In these conditions, any spark could easily cause a wildfire that spreads quickly.

🚩Another Red Flag Warning has been issued for 29 counties in parts of northwest, west central, and southwest Minnesota. The National Weather Service noted that low relative humidity and high winds will combine to create extreme fire risk this afternoon.

When a Red Flag Warning is in effect:
🚫 Don't burn brush or yard waste
⚠️ Campfires are discouraged
❗️Be careful with any outdoor activity that can cause heat or sparks. Metal from yard equipment that hits a rock could create a spark. Park vehicles and ATVs on gravel or pavement to avoid the hot exhaust systems heating nearby tall grass.
✅ Check burn piles, campfire areas, and ash piles from wood burning stoves or heaters for lingering heat from past fires. If you find heat, drown it with water, stir, and repeat until it's out COLD.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8:00 pm this evening for a large part of the area.

At the same time, we have seen a few hot spots pop up this afternoon.

If you are out and about, please do what you can to prevent the start and spread of a fire!

The combination of strong winds, dry conditions, and warmer temperatures will lead to extreme fire danger from this afternoon through early evening. As a result, a Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 12 pm through 8 pm. Avoid any outdoor burning as a fire could quickly spread out of control!

High to Very High Fire Danger across the region today.

The combination of west to northwest wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph, relative humidity values between 20 and 30%, and dry grasses and fire fuels will lead to the elevated fire danger today.

Avoid outdoor burning and use caution to avoid sparks.

Thank you to everyone that helped make this a success. We couldn't have done it without you.
