Jury Questionnaires were recently sent out for this term. We are missing questionnaires from several Yellowstone County residents. Please see the following list of jurors who were chosen for an upcoming jury trial in Yellowstone County District Court, who have not returned the jury duty questionnaire for the 2026 jury season.

The Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office is required to personally serve chosen jurors who have not returned questionnaires, but we do not have to make that house call if the questionnaire is returned. We appreciate your attention to this important civic duty!

After (20) years of service, Sergeant Lauwers is retiring from the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office.

Sergeant Lauwers began his career in 2006 as a Detention Officer at YCDF, serving as a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) member, Court Officer, Field Training Officer (FTO), and Officer in Charge. In 2014, he became a Deputy, continuing his work as a CIT member and FTO.

Sergeant Lauwers was promoted to Corporal in 2017 and Sergeant in 2022, where he led the Training and Professional Standards Division and served on the STEER and CAMO treatment courts. In 2025, he returned back to the street as a Patrol Sergeant.

Today we celebrate Ashley’s 2-year anniversary as a Sheriff’s Clerk with the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office!

Sheriff’s Clerks are the central hub of our agency, serving as a vital link between the public, our deputies, detention staff, partner agencies, and the many divisions within the Sheriff’s Office. Their work often happens behind the scenes, but their dedication, professionalism, and commitment help keep our operations running smoothly every day.

When asked about her role, Ashley shared: “I love working closely with law enforcement and it has been such a pleasure to help the community. Being a Sheriff’s Clerk has been a fulfilling career choice.”

Yellowstone County Detention Facility would like thank NIJO (National Institute for Jail Operations) for the recognition and honoring us with the "Detention Facility Innovation Award". This award is given to a facility which has demonstrated exceptional achievement in developing and/or enhancing a particular aspect or feature in the facility or in the operations.

Officers attended classes on leadership, legal-based training, use of force, mental health, gang training, and so much more!

Undersheriff Lester instructed a course "Winning the Talent War: Detention Facility Edition" The course covered leadership, accountability, resiliency, recruiting, and high morals.

We were also given the opportunity to network and collaborate with agencies and vendors around the Midwest. Ideas were shared and meaningful partnerships were built. We look forward to using these resources to better serve our communities within Yellowstone County.

Last night, Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office Deputies, along with Montana Highway Patrol, assisted Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks with safely securing and relocating a black bear that was spotted east of Billings.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved, the bear and the public remained safe throughout the operation.

We appreciate the partnership and professionalism demonstrated by everyone involved. Great teamwork leads to great outcomes for both our community and Montana’s wildlife.
