Broome County Environmental Management Council

Broome County Environmental Management Council Broome County's citizens' advisory board for County Government on Environmental Matters You don't have to be an expert on the environment to participate.

The Environmental Management Council (EMC) was established in 1971 by the Broome County Legislature to preserve, protect, and enhance the local environment. The members of the EMC are Broome County residents with a concern for the environment. While some of our members have formal training in the environmental field, many are self-taught. EMC volunteers are from a variety of occupational and prof

essional backgrounds, including business, education, engineering, science, and homemaking. The only requirement is interest. The EMC also organizes an annual Environmental Photography Competition and Riverbank Cleanup. Check for details about these events on the EMC's website and page.

Awesome news!

Today, I announced a new Citywide composting initiative in partnership with VINES, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County and the Klee Foundation.

Supported by grant funding, this program will build a new community composting system at the VINES Urban Farm, upgrade the composting systems at more than a dozen community gardens and help more residents compost at home.

Composting is a key part of the City's Climate Action Plan — helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cut landfill waste and support local food production. This is another step forward in Binghamton’s leadership on sustainability.

Thank you to our partners and funders, including Partners for Places and the Klee Foundation, for helping us build a cleaner, greener Binghamton.

April 7-13th is both National Public Health Week and Food Waste Prevention Week! Did you know that food waste prevention and your health go hand-in-hand? Sustainability projects like composting help prevent food scraps from going to a landfill, where they would release greenhouse gasses and contribute to climate change. When the planet warms, it’s harder for your food to grow!

Here at the Broome County Health Department, our Sustainability Committee has prevented about 600 pounds of food scraps from going to the landfill over the last year - that’s about the equivalent of driving your car for about 1,200 miles! Our compost is donated to VINES, where they’re able to use it for gardening.

If you want to start composting, you don’t need any fancy tools or equipment - just food and yard waste! If you don’t have a yard or a need for your own compost, you can keep your unused food in your your freezer, then drop it off to a composting facility.
