We are outraged and deeply saddened by the brutal killing, by children, of an unhoused man in our community. This act of violence is not only tragic—it is a reflection of deeper systemic failures that continue to dehumanize and endanger our most vulnerable residents.

Being unhoused should never make someone a target. Every person deserves dignity, safety, and protection, regardless of their housing status. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for increased investment in homelessness prevention, mental health services, and community-based supports that protect lives and restore humanity.

At the same time, we must confront the growing need to engage and support our youth with meaningful opportunities, mentorship, and accountability. Violence is not created in isolation—it is shaped by the environments we allow to persist.

We cannot accept this as an isolated incident. It is a call to action. Our community must come together to demand change, invest in solutions, and ensure that no one is left vulnerable to such senseless violence again.

The Broome County Urban League is on Capitol Hill in Washington, with Urban League Affiliates from across the country, meeting with members of the United States Congress and the United States Senate to advocate for policies that advance equity and opportunity.

I was proud to be here with my fellow New York CEO’s. These meetings focused on key priorities including education, workforce development, affordable housing, and economic empowerment, ensuring the needs of Broome County residents are represented at the federal level.
