Today, Junior Firefighters Marcus Stoltzfus and Monroe Miller attended a live fire training, marking the final day of the Essentials of Firefighting program.

Over the past four months, they have completed more than 180 hours of basic firefighting training. Today’s live fire evolutions served as a culmination of the skills they’ve developed throughout the course.

A few years ago, state legislation was updated to allow 17-year-old junior firefighters to complete the full basic firefighting program. This allows them to be fully certified upon their 18th birthday—a significant benefit for volunteer fire companies that are always in need of well-trained, qualified firefighters.

Last evening’s training was led by two instructors from Tailboard Training, focusing on firefighter survival and RIT operations.

The evening began with emergency firefighter bailout techniques and progressed into multiple scenarios involving the removal of downed firefighters from a basement environment.

Once again, firefighters from Station 41 were able to utilize this structure to train in realistic, hands-on conditions.

This evening, 26 of Hand In Hand Fire Company’s firefighters completed their annual Hazmat Operations Refresher Training. This important training helps our members stay current on hazardous materials response procedures and operational best practices.

Students also reviewed Emergency Response Guidebook books and Safety Data Sheets for various hazardous materials, helping reinforce critical response information.

Thank you to Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center and Instructor Walt Bair for providing this valuable program.

Over the past several weeks, the Hand-In-Hand Fire Company, in conjunction with LCPSTC and Instructors Clark and Gribble, hosted a State Fire Academy Pumps 1 and Pumps 2 class. Around 20 students from area departments successfully completed the program.

Between both courses, students completed 16 hours of classroom instruction followed by 16 hours of hands-on practical training. Pumps 1 introduced the fundamentals of pump operations, including pump construction, basic hydraulics, water supply, and handline operations. Pumps 2 built on these skills with advanced topics such as friction loss, relay pumping, and master stream operations.

These courses help prepare firefighters to safely and effectively operate fire apparatus pumps in both basic and complex fireground situations.
