The below update is from Firefighter Stephen Leachman. Stephen and his wife, Katie, drove to Texas this past Sunday, pulling a 20 foot trailer full of donations that this community has so generously given.

I rolled back in from Texas at about 1 am this morning. We were able to get a room in Lake Charles Sunday night, unexpectedly! We met a family there that lived in the Orange/Bridge City area of Texas. They, as well as, everyone she knew lost everything. The area is devastated from flooding. Some water has started to recede but most still have standing water in their homes.

Since I hadn't heard back from anyone in the Port Aurthur area, where we were originally going, we coordinated with her and decided on setting up at the Flying J truck stop off of I-10 at the Bridge City exit. She sent out the location on Facebook and before we could get there we had a line of people waiting. We couldn't unload fast enough! In 3 hours we had given out everything we'd brought. I think we figured it was around 1,000 people that we were able to get supplies to.

Everyone I came in contact with was so gracious of us and the community we serve. FEMA had not made it to that area and The Red Cross was not fully functional there yet. Everyone is relying on people like us to get by until more assistance gets to the area. I am looking at going back around two weeks from now.

Here is a list of what's needed most for the area we are serving. If we run out of room, these are items that we can store here if relief efforts are needed after Irma makes landfall. We WILL NOT be accepting used clothing.

Water
Diapers
Wipes
Baby formula
Feminine hygiene products
Adult diapers
Bleach tablets
Multi surface disinfectant
Dust Masks
Work Gloves
Trash bags
Bug spray
Rags
Paper towels
Pet food
Toilet paper
Brooms
Mops
Buckets
First-aid supplies
Ibuprofen
Tylenol
Antacids
Sinus meds
