The Mike Eskridge Legacy 5k will be this Saturday, June 6th, from 5:00 PM until about 8:00 PM. The run will start downtown, proceed through the Manhattan Street neighborhood area, and conclude back downtown. Expect road closures and/or traffic delays on and around the route during this time. FELONY ANIMAL CRUELTY ARREST

On May 30th, 2026, at approximately 1:00 PM, the Homewood Police Department received multiple 911 calls regarding a person throwing kittens from a moving vehicle driving on I-65 near Lakeshore Drive. Homewood Police Officers quickly responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle described by witnesses on Lakeshore Drive. Officers stopped the vehicle and detained the driver. Homewood officers spoke to multiple witnesses who reported seeing the driver of the vehicle in question throw five kittens out of the window while he was driving on I-65. Tragically, all five of the kittens were struck and killed on the interstate by other vehicles.

After the investigation, Thomas Ronald Liccione, age 21, of Birmingham, was arrested for Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. He was transported to Jefferson County Jail with a $15,000 bond.

The Homewood Police Department takes animal abuse and cruelty calls very seriously. We would like to sincerely thank the witnesses and motorists who contacted Homewood 911 and provided information to Homewood Police Officers on scene.

Today Mayfair Drive will be closed for a community block party from Roxbury Road to Wellington Road from 1:00 PM until about 5:00 PM. Please drive with caution near the closure and watch for pedestrians.

The Homewood Police Department has recently hired a parking control officer to begin enforcing parking violations in the downtown Homewood business district. We would like to remind all our residents, as well as visitors to Homewood, that downtown street parking and the SoHo lots are limited to three hours. There are also two parking spaces reserved for Law Enforcement Parking Only in front of the plaza on 19th Street South. Please be mindful of the time that your vehicles are parked in these areas, as the Homewood Police Department will soon be enforcing observed parking violations. We want all our residents and visitors to be able to easily access our downtown business district and better experience all that Homewood has to offer.

HOMEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE

Car Burglary Suspect Arrested

On May 10th, 2026, at approximately 10:45 AM, the Homewood Police Department began receiving calls regarding a suspicious person seen entering residents’ vehicles in the 100 block of St. Charles Street. Multiple Homewood Police officers quickly responded and began checking the area. Officers located the suspect in the 400 block of St. Charles Street and attempted to detain him, at which point the suspect fled on foot. Officers pursed the suspect through the neighborhood, until he was apprehended in the 900 block of Irving Road. After speaking to residents, officers were able to determine that the suspect had illegally entered two vehicles and stolen property from each one, all of which was returned to their owners.

Lucas Durham Moore, age 23, of Vestavia Hills, AL was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

- Unlawful Breaking and Entering of a Vehicle x 2 ($15,000 bond each)
- Theft of Property – Third Degree ($10,000 bond)
- Theft of Property – Fourth Degree ($3,000 bond)
- Attempting to Elude a Police Officer ($6,000 bond)
- Resisting Arrest ($3,000 bond)

Moore was transferred to the Jefferson County Jail on the above listed charges.

The Homewood Police Department would like to sincerely thank the Edgewood residents for their assistance in this investigation, including locating stolen property and providing doorbell camera footage to officers.

**Road Closure**

Due to construction 29th Avenue South, from 19th Street South to 19th Place South, will be blocked until about 1:00 PM. All businesses in the area remain accessible via side streets.

There is a visible police presence in the area of St. Charles Street and Irving Road. The Homewood Police Department received several calls regarding a subject breaking into vehicles in the neighborhood. Homewood Police officers quickly responded, scoured the area, and were able to take the subject into custody without incident. There is no threat to the public at this time. Homewood Police officers are still in the area speaking to residents and gathering information from victims whose vehicles were broken into.
