"I’m a firm believer that having access to information is a sacred human right, especially in the world we are living in now. Knowledge helps us grow. Knowledge helps us improve our circumstances and our surroundings. Without it, we’re stuck in the mud.
I think a lot of times it’s easy for us to take for granted that we have access to WiFi, but there are certain people in the City – roughly 35,000 households -- who don’t have access at all. This is one of the main reasons why it was crucial to utilize a portion of my office’s American Rescue Plan Act dollars to increase Internet access for approximately 1,000 homes in Collegeville. This is made possible through an ongoing partnership with Open Broadband, Woodlawn United, and Microsoft Airband. We’re starting in Collegeville but we’re not going to stop there." Read Councilor JT Moore's full article here:
For those who qualify for the federal Affordable Connectivity Program, monthly payments will only be $10 for high-speed Internet.
This week we’re talking HOMEOWNERSHIP 🏠

Our Man of Change✨⚡️
Councilor J.T. Moore says being honored as a local ‘Man of Change’ over the weekend was a very humbling experience.
It’s all part of the Men of Change exhibit that is on display right now through early December over at the Birmingham Public Library’s Central location.
Created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) “Men of Change” highlights revolutionary men who have altered or influenced history and culture. The BCRI is hosting the exhibit in collaboration with the library—and if you haven’t seen it yet—you are missing out! Luckily, you’ve still got plenty of time to drop by this space of inspiration.
Aisha Taylor is 2023 Gee Emerging Retailer of the year. She is the owner of Bridge+Root which is located in historic downtown Birminghams district 5. Councilor Darrell O’Quinn was there for the announcement and to help celebrate the occasion.

🎶 TONIGHT AT CITY WALK 🎶
Earlier today, our Council President Wardine Alexander (D7) joined the Riley-Travellick Community, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church Riley, and the family, friends, and loved ones of the late Rev. Clarence R. Smith and his wife, Shirley T. Smith for a street dedication ceremony in his honor.
We were thrilled to be part of the unveiling of this new sign and prayer walk honoring Rev. Smith—who was pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Riley from 1968-1992.
Thank you to everyone who made this lovely afternoon possible.

Early Morning First Tee Golf at Sun Valley Elementary was a blast!⛳️Students from the Miles College Golf Team came to teach Sun Valley Elementary the fundamentals of the game. Thank you to the First Tee organization for all of the work that you do!
Sixty Years Commemoration of Church Bombing
Last night was special. Councilors Darrell O’Quinn and Carol Clarke took part in an evening of remembrance and reflection at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church as part of the Ballard House Project’s commemoration.
This was a moment to reflect on Birmingham’s living history. Some people tend to think of that history – that was captured in black and white images – as being in the distant past. Ancient history.
But to this day, even gathered with us last night, are people who risked their lives for the pursuit of justice and equality. And in doing so, helped change the world. Their courage can never be overstated nor forgotten.
A busy, fun weekend ahead! We hope you’ll make plans to join us! 🎶🍃🧹
