Birmingham City Schools Institute: We are Kung fu fighting!
Day 1 of 2018-2019 Standardized Testing (Scantron Performance Series) is in the books and what a busy day it has been! Our faculty and staff dressed in their "War" gear, as we declared War on conquering this test!!!!
Our morning started with the majority of our students eating breakfast, because we all know we do our best work on a full stomach.
After breakfast, Principal Johnson met with the students in the gym to offer some words of encouragement concerning testing. We know one test does not measure all areas of our students' abilities, but we do know accountability is important, and we want to do our best.
As the students were dismissed from the gym, Assistant Principal White and Mrs. Simpson handed each student a handful of M&M Power Pills to provide a little chocolate rush. Students unable to have chocolate were provided with peppermint. Many of our wonderful and supportive parents have provided treats for our students to enjoy during testing.
The faulty and staff were provided delicious bagels and cream cheese spreads from Panara Bread...thanks to Carita Venable, a huge supporter of our school for providing our staff with such a wonderful treat.
Day 1 of testing went well. Our students were very excited and worked very hard. As an incentive, students meeting their goals were allowed to spend time in the game room following testing. We just know that tomorrow even more students will have this opportunity because we are winners in everything we do.
Wilkerson Middle School had the esteemed privilege to host and honor one of the Alabama African American History Calendar Honorees sponsored by AT & T, Mrs Jeanette Scissum, the first African American female Mathematician and Scientist at NASA and a Hidden Figure graduate of Alabama A & M University.
Mrs. Scissum spoke to an intimate group of students about her life and legacy. She also challenged them to dream big, prepare now for their future, and to never accept defeat.
Several students reflected on how her words encouraged them and the appreciation they have for her contributions to society and the world of education.
To show our appreciation, she was presented with a wreath especially made by our Secretary, Ms. Brenda Perry, a fruit basket, and momentous gifts representing our school's name.
