Good morning, Island dwellers! Earlier this week, we were thinking a lot about the intersections between the material plane (our world) and the astral plane (the energetic realm), between the physical and the spiritual. The beauty of the vèvè as a point of confluence for the two.

This morning, keeping in mind the complex relationship between things physical and spiritual, material and energetic, we are meditating upon this card from the New Orleans Vodou Tarot, drawn by Mambo Sallie Ann Glassman. In this card, which is dedicated to the Bawon, we see Bawons and Maman Brijit, backed by Les Morts (the dead), climbing a set of stairs that look as though they could lead to a courthouse. Maman Brijit, of course, is a wise and fair judge who holds sway in legal matters and can be appealed to for help. But also, as Mambo Sallie Ann writes in her book Vodou Visions, the Bawon consume the knowledge of everyone who dies, so they are very wise. They see things we cannot see, and they know things we cannot, on our own, know. They experience time so differently from us that morality and existence look different to them. This may be one reason why their humor can seem base or vulgar from a human perspective; and also why it may sometimes seem sharp or even cruel (at someone's expense, which it often is, or revealing secrets, which they often do). They don't understand existence in the same context that we do, because their context is so different from ours in this life.

And, in their vision and wisdom, the Bawon teach us that if we can find that sense of vision within ourselves—if we can find humor in even our most tragic moments, we can in some ways transcend our limited human perspective. This is not an easy thing to do (and it doesn't mean anyone should feel compelled to go around laughing in the face of tragedy, either; we do not think anyone should do that, and we are not condoning insensitive or unkind behavior towards others or towards oneself). But if we can learn to experience and acknowledge tragedy, grieving *while* also keeping awareness of other feelings, perspectives, and dimensions to existence—we can evolve spiritually in this way.

It's difficult work, this life. We can thank the Bawon-yo for reminding us that honesty and humor are key to experiencing it all, even in the face of chaos and adversity.
