Happy Labor Day! City of Birmingham offices are closed today, Monday, Sept. 7. City business will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Please note: refuse collection will be delayed by one day this week. Please place all containers at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day after your normal refuse collection day.

As always, the police and fire departments will be on duty today to ensure the community’s safety. For immediate assistance, please contact:

If your holiday weekend plans include cleaning up after the recent wild weather, know that the city will have extra brush chippers making rounds to collect downed branches curbside next week.

Stack branches that are more than four feet long and up to four inches in diameter at the curb, with cut ends all facing the same direction (preferably in the direction of traffic flow).

Smaller storm debris can be placed in kraft-paper yard waste bags or in a trash bin labeled with a yard waste sticker and left at the curb on your regular collection day.

A reminder at the start of a long Labor Day weekend: City of Birmingham offices will be closed for the holiday on Monday, Sept. 7. City business will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and refuse collection will be delayed one day next week.

Please join us in congratulating Birmingham’s new Chief of Police Ryan Kearney, who was appointed to the role in August! Chief Kearney has served the Birmingham Police Department for 23 years, including most recently as interim police chief following former Chief Grewe’s retirement.

For several years prior, Chief Kearney oversaw special events and the patrol division, and served as the Police Department liaison to the city’s Multi-Modal Transportation Board. You might also recognize him as the handler of the city’s therapy K9 Maple! Throughout his career, he has demonstrated professionalism under pressure and has been a positive and steady presence within the Police Department.

Chief Kearney holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Western Michigan University, and is a 2021 graduate of the Eastern Michigan University School of Staff and Command, where he earend the Outstanding Research Award and the Academic Achievement Award.

If you see him around town, be sure to say hello and wish him well in his new role!

Don’t miss the last Birmingham Shopping District outdoor movie night this Friday, Sept. 4, in Booth Park, with a showing of OG Lilo & Stitch (2002)! The pre-show fun begins at 6:30 p.m., with the feature presentation at 7:30 p.m. – bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the family-friendly show!
