Civil Air Patrol observes its 72nd anniversary as the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force this week – a role authorized by Congress with Public Law 80-557 and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

The White House telegram (seen below) broke the news on May 26, 1948. Before that, CAP had served in support of the U.S. Army Air Corps. The 1948 law ensured that the partnership would continue with the newly formed Air Force, which was created Sept. 18, 1947.

The relationship reached another level in August 2015 with the announcement that the all-volunteer auxiliary would be included as a Total Force partner of the Air Force, joining members of the active Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

“Civil Air Patrol volunteers have a rich history of service to country,” said National Commander and CEO Maj. Gen. Mark Smith, commenting recently on CAP's record-breaking performance during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “They have banded together to perform a myriad of humanitarian missions as members of the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.”

The United States Air Force Band

HONOR | As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, let us reflect on the tremendous price that was paid by the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Through the sounding of Taps, members of The United States Air Force Band solemnly render honor to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

A long-held musical tradition at military funerals, the music of Taps originated from a Civil War bugle call entitled, “Extinguish Lights”. A plaintive call, the sounding of Taps signals the end of the fallen serviceman’s duty and is the final tribute from a grateful nation.

To those who have given the last full measure of devotion, we honor your service, pay tribute to your lives, and thank you for your selfless sacrifice.

We'd like to thank Mr. Matthew Priest, Director of Culpeper National Cemetery, all of the staff at Culpeper National Cemetery, as well as Ms. Richelle Taylor, Public Affairs Specialist with the Department of Veteran Affair’s National Cemetery Administration, for their help making this tribute possible.

Alabama Wing,

I hope everyone is doing well given the fact that we are pretty much staying home. My family and I are doing well. As you probably figured out, your leadership and myself have been looking at the remainder of our schedule for this year, and trying to make some decisions as to what and when are we going to try to finish our schedule. Also, we have been keeping up with the most current COVID-19 situation in Alabama. Unfortunately, the virus does not seem to be easing up, which means we could be looking at the current socializing limitations remaining in tact until the end of May. Also, the hotels around the state are under stricter guidelines when it comes to hosting large crowds until 1 June.

So, we held a discussion with the hotel management and found a workable date of 19 - 21 June 2020 for hosting our Wing Conference. At this point, the hotel staff is reworking our contract and moving all of our arrangements over to that weekend. Again, you do not have to do anything at this point if you had hotel reservations. Also, you have time to make reservations for the event.

As for our Summer Encampment, we are going to postpone it and are weighing our options for getting it in this year. Several factors have gone into this decision. First, the current location for our encampment is in question because of the Alabama National Guard's Training Requirements. Their schedules are sliding to the right like ours. Also, we are awaiting new policy requirements from NHQ, which will have to be worked into our plans. We will keep you posted on the new dates and location once we figure it out.

As for the Color Guard Competition, we had to cancel the event. We will be issuing refunds for the people who registered for it. This event is being postponed until 2021.

By now, you should have been told the new Region Event's Schedule, which has changed drastically. Further, I would expect the Summer NCSAs will be changed or cancelled. We are awaiting further word on those activities.

We apologize for the continued fluctuation in scheduling, but we are going through some unprecedented times, and your health and safety have been most important to your leadership team. Please continue meeting and working virtually until we get cleared to start getting back together.

If you have questions or concerns, please consult with your leadership team. They can work through the chain of command as needed.

Wishing All the Best,

Col James Harris, CAP
Commander, Alabama Wing

TO BE AN AMERICAN To be an American is something grand, As witnessed from a distant land. The quality of life we enjoy here, Is surely something that we should hold dear. Many complain within these doors, Who have never traveled to distant shores. They have never seen the poverty and pain, As in so many places misery reigns. If life is so horrible in this place, Why do so many to these shores race? Is it as bad as is commonly reported? Or have some carelessly, the facts distorted? From one who has been privileged to many places see, There is no place on earth I would rather be. These blessings on which we have grown to depend, I trust that we all will eagerly defend. 2Lt James E. Martin 117th ANG Composite Sq.
