CASA of Jefferson County The mission of CASA of Jefferson County is to be the voice for children who have been victims of abuse and/or neglect. Our Vision is to serve every child in the Jefferson County by providing them with a caring and competent trained volunteer.

CASA of Jeffferson County was founded in 1985 under the leadership and direction of Family Court. It was the first CASA program in Alabama. In March of 2009, CASA became a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Jenn is one of our valued CASA Volunteers! When she isn’t volunteering she spends her time studying for dental school, cycling & trying out new outdoor hobbies!

“I got involved with CASA after two of my friends spoke so highly of their experience. As a relatively new Birmingham resident I wanted to be an involved member of my new community in a relationship-focused role, and CASA was the perfect opportunity! I have learned so much by being a CASA, and have found it to be both rewarding and challenging at times.” -Jenn

Caitlin has been a CASA volunteer for almost 6 years now! We are incredibly thankful for all of her time & commitment to CASA throughout the years!

“I truly believe in the mission of CASA, because I feel as though there can never be too many people fighting for children. I love volunteering for CASA because I believe every child deserves to have a loving family. I love that I get to be a small part of a difference in their life.” -Caitlin

Kicking off our Spotlight is Sara Rogan✨

Sara has been a CASA for over 3 years and although she now works as an attorney in Montgomery she has stayed involved in Jefferson County CASA and we are beyond thankful for her work!

“I believe in the CASA mission because too many kids have had no choice but to grow up too fast. Childhood should be a carefree time filled with great memories, wonderful parents, and a stable home. However, this isn't the case for lots of kids in the world, and Jefferson County is no exception. These children have endured so much, and they need someone advocating for them.” -Sara

Our program staff and volunteers have been able to pivot to serve children and families in a
different way. We continue to recruit, provide online training, and hold virtually and socially-distanced
swearing-in ceremonies for new volunteers. Staff and volunteers are providing socially distant advocacy—
Facetiming, texting, Zooming and “visiting” from the safety of the sidewalk. By being that caring consistent
adult, CASA volunteers have been the certainty in uncertain times for these children.

During the pandemic, families have been quarantined and separated for months from their loved ones in an effort to stay healthy. Imagine what it’s been like for thousands of children who were removed from their homes and placed in foster care during this time. Picture children having to relocate to a new home, new school, attend courtroom hearings with a revolving door of adults—all while coping with the trauma of abuse
or neglect.

So many things have changed. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the difference that a volunteer makes in
the life of a child. Our programs and volunteers have seen first-hand the pandemic’s impact on the children
and families we serve. This includes the disruption of children’s support networks and the suspension of
critically important services like visitation with family, therapy and special education services.

As Alabamians go back to school, we want to remind everyone about mandatory reporters. A mandatory reporter is a person because of his or her profession, is legally required to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect to the relevant authorities. Teachers and specific school faculty members fall into the category of a mandatory reporter.

We are so thankful for our volunteers — they really do make a difference! ❤️ We are excited to have a training class next week with 25 new volunteer advocates!

CASA volunteers work to help a child reach home!

Our volunteers get to know the child − they listen; they talk to the people in the child’s life to find out what they need to heal and thrive; they make sure the child is safe; and they help the child reach a safe, permanent home.
