Women United is celebrating rockstar women who lead UWCA partner agencies and are making change happen for our community. This week’s #WomenCrushWednesday spotlights Joan Wright, Executive Director of Childcare Resources. During her 14 years at the agency, she has helped shape the region’s childcare sector providing information, education and assistance to families, providers of childcare and the community all with a goal of making quality care and education for children a reality. The pandemic disproportionately affected childcare providers and families needing childcare assistance putting an even greater emphasis on the necessity of the work she leads at Childcare Resources.

When asked her advice for the rising generation of women, Joan emphasizes young women need to be willing to adapt. They should also know their strengths and highlight them wherever possible—whether that’s in interviews, on your resume or elsewhere. For women looking to make an impact in their communities, she says, “Believe in your power of influence and management style. Recognize the role you play in inspiring others to dare, dream and succeed.” Thank you Joan for your leadership!

Women United is celebrating rockstar women who lead UWCA partner agencies and are moving mountains for those in our community. Our second #WomenCrushWednesday spotlights Dr. LaRhonda Magras, CEO of the YWCA Central Alabama LaRhonda stepped into her role in 2019, bringing three decades of experience leading programs to assist women, children and marginalized communities in cities across the county.

“The opportunity to lead a YWCA whose mission is not only awe-inspiring but deeply personal is what led me to serve in this role. YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women touches on two of my identities as a Black woman. As a result, I demonstrate genuine empathy, compassion, and determination to realize change. Our YWCA has a rich 119-year history of providing support to women and their families when they need it the most” stated LaRhonda. “As long as I am on this journey, we will remain focused on creating transformational, long-lasting change for the people we serve.”

“This public health crisis put additional pressure on those experiencing domestic violence. With so many businesses, courts, schools, and nonprofit organizations struggling to safely and consistently offer services, those in need of assistance had a harder time getting it. For many women trying to leave an abusive relationship, child care and employment are key things they need to establish themselves separately from their abuser. And with those resources in short demand, many victims were left without options.” As a result, the YWCA saw a spike in calls to their 24-hour Crisis Line: 205-322-4878 (HURT). LaRhonda and her team jumped into action to quickly implement strategies to provide services in a way that was safe and effective while still meeting the increasing needs of victims and survivors of domestic violence across Central Alabama.

Women United is highlighting the amazing female directors who lead UWCA partner agencies and do great work for our community!
Our first #WomenCrushWednesday spotlights President & CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Alabama (BGCCA), Leisa Smith. Leisa has worked with the organization for 35 years—five of those spent at the Central Alabama chapter.

“I believe the Boys & Girls Club chose me. When I was a college student at Indiana University Southeast there was a posting on the job board for a front desk clerk with the Boys Club in New Albany, IN. What started then as a part-time job quickly became a lifelong passion and purpose for serving kids. As my professional development grew with the Boys & Girls Club, opportunities and desire to do more for our youth and their future have led me to where I am today.”

Through the pandemic, she and her team continued to provide local youth with the services they depended on, despite restrictions. They scheduled wellness calls, created opportunities to pick up food and prepared activity packets for the Club’s members. During the summer of 2020, the BGCCA even partnered with the Food Bank of Central Alabama to distribute 600 boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables weekly to local families!

#TBT to last week's Collat Scholars day of service as they partnered with United Way of Central Alabama to stuff 500 bags for the Success By 6 program. The books will help prepare area pre-K students from low income household for school. Students were also joined by Nancy Collat Goedecke. The day of service is aimed at continuing the Collat family legacy of doing good and being better. "We're very thankful to Mr. Collat and want to say thank you to the Collat family," Dr. Michele Bunn told students. "We want to pay tribute to them by giving back to Birmingham."
