UWCA is celebrating Black History Month with brief stories from our own staff and community volunteers. We asked them one question: Who is your Black History Superhero? Today’s respondent is Jasmine Wright, one of UWCA’s 2019 Loaned Executives from Protective Life Corporation and a strong advocate for United Way, having served on our Visiting Allocation Teams and preparing to chair this year’s internal campaign at Protective.

“I have so many superheroes from Black History,” said Jasmine, “but if I had to choose just one, and assuming it couldn’t be my mother, I would choose Coretta Scott King. I am told that she is a distant cousin of mine as my paternal grandfather’s mother was a Scott. She is a hero to me because it takes a great woman to support and sacrifice her husband in the fight toward equal and fair treatment for everyone, not just her own household. Even after his death, she continued the movement in so many ways. She pushed and successfully fought to get her husband’s birthday established as a national holiday, which has since been considered a national day of service. She not only advocated for the African American race but also fought for the rights of the LGBTQ community. She also worked to build and establish the King Center in Atlanta, where she continued the great work of Dr. King. What an inspiration!”

UWCA is celebrating Black History Month with brief stories from our own staff and community volunteers. We asked them one question: Who is your Black History Superhero? Today’s respondent is Martina Winston, one of our very active volunteers with UWCA’s J. Mason Davis Leadership Society. Martina is Vice President & Senior HR Partner at Protective Life Corporation, where she also serves as Diversity & Inclusion Leader.

“My grandfather is my hero,” said Martina. “He has not only been a great role model as a black father/grandfather and head-of-household but has demonstrated the value of serving and giving back to the community. Today, he is 93 years old and is still serving to this day. His passion for his community was always been attractive to me and I appreciate him every day for showing me the importance of serving people. I’m passionate about the opportunity to serve with an organization [United Way of Central Alabama] that shares the same values that I have around supporting people and the community.”

UWCA is celebrating Black History Month with brief stories from our own staff and community volunteers. We asked them one question: Who is your Black History Superhero? Our first respondent is Judy Woods, Financial Specialist here at United Way. Judy said that question was very easy to answer because her superhero is her father.

“My father, Bishop Calvin Wallace Woods, Sr., is my Black History Superhero. He worked as an assistant to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led marches with Rosa Parks and drove MLK to the airport on his last visit to Birmingham, before Dr. King was assassinated. My father’s first airplane ride was to Atlanta in 1963 with attorneys Constance Baker Motley and Jack Greenberg (both of whom later became federal judges) to file a lawsuit against the Birmingham Board of Education on behalf on my sister and other children in Birmingham, who were expelled from school for their participation in the civil rights demonstration. He always has been, and continues to be, an advocate for the rights of others.”

My family and I have been trying to get information to have meal delivery begin for my aging Dad and Mom. We have left numerous messages and no one will call us back. I know you are very busy and provide a wonderful service but our emails and calls have gone without any response for a week now. Due to a recent fall, our parents cannot cook or drive and are in their late 80's. My sister works in Bham and has no way to get them food. All we want is for someone to respond to us. Please call. 205-514-4123 and speak with my sister.
Retaliation against people with intellectual and developmental disabilities . . . . one self-advocate's story of losing his home due to his and his families relentless advocacy regarding his ability to simply choose his own food! It would be very much appreciated if you ask this question to service providers as you determine programs to fund. Violating Human Rights regarding choice of something as simple as food should be a red flag.
Your donation will make a difference in the lives of many people in our community. Thank you for your help.
