See how our United Way Area Agency on Aging of Jefferson County is checking in with residents about the importance of staying connected during the pandemic.

Our Long-Term Care Ombudsman program recently asked nursing homes in Jefferson County to talk to their residents about the importance of staying connected to family and friends during the pandemic. Residents are likely to experience feelings of isolation and loneliness due to restricted visitation. We were happy to learn from Mt. Royal Towers, St. Martin’s in the Pines, Trussville Health and Rehab and Peachtree Senior Living that many residents are finding a variety of ways to stay in touch, as indicated by the wonderful photos they sent us. This is Jaunita, a lifelong resident of Birmingham who is on dialysis treatment and needs a good deal of assistance. Her sister, Diana, helps out a lot, but she can’t always be there to prepare meals. Over the years, Meals on Wheels has made sure that Jaunita never goes hungry, having made almost 1,000 deliveries to her.
These days, homebound seniors like Jaunita need assistance more than ever. Remember them with a $25 donation

My family and I have been trying to get information to have meal delivery begin for my aging Dad and Mom. We have left numerous messages and no one will call us back. I know you are very busy and provide a wonderful service but our emails and calls have gone without any response for a week now. Due to a recent fall, our parents cannot cook or drive and are in their late 80's. My sister works in Bham and has no way to get them food. All we want is for someone to respond to us. Please call. 205-514-4123 and speak with my sister.
Retaliation against people with intellectual and developmental disabilities . . . . one self-advocate's story of losing his home due to his and his families relentless advocacy regarding his ability to simply choose his own food! It would be very much appreciated if you ask this question to service providers as you determine programs to fund. Violating Human Rights regarding choice of something as simple as food should be a red flag.
Your donation will make a difference in the lives of many people in our community. Thank you for your help.
