Thank you to everyone who attended the BI Masters Event in our Birmingham showroom last Thursday. Despite the drizzly weather, the turnout was GREAT, and we appreciate everyone spending their lunch hour or their afternoon with us. ⛳️

Our 6-hole Mini Golf course was well traversed, with some lighthearted trash talk between industry friends and coworkers.

The pay-to-fundraise Hit-It-to-Win-It Putting Challenge was great fun that tested the efforts of both the serious golfers and the casual beach vacation mini-golfer. Guests left with prizes galore, including dozens of gift cards, a dozen (or more…) bottles of whiskey, and an Eames Turned Stool.

Because of the generous participation of our attendees, the Hit-It-to-Win-It challenge raised $1,250 for the The ALS Association Alabama Chapter! From your friends at BI, MillerKnoll, Carpet Specialties, Inc., Interface, and Momentum Textiles & Wallcovering – THANK YOU. ❤️

Members of the Business Interiors Birmingham team, along with friends, family, and pets, participated in the 2024 Birmingham Heart Walk this past weekend. The walk is an annual health event and fundraiser for the American Heart Association; it is one of many walks scheduled by the AHA around the United States.

BI joined forces with walkers from Gresham Smith’s Birmingham office for a brisk, early morning 5K stroll.

In November 2023, the Alabaster Police Department opened the doors of their new headquarters after having previously been in the same building for the past seventy years. The new 34,000-square-foot facility is the workplace for nearly 90 officers and staff and is home to several agencies, training classes, interview rooms, evidence storage, communication facilities, and temporary housing for inmates.

Business Interiors was awarded the project in early 2020, just before the COVID shutdown. It was late August 2020 before the ground ceremony took place, and then January 2021 when construction started. Despite COVID-related project delays, the BI team worked steadfastly and patiently with members of the department to see the project through for over three years.

The project’s scope included Private Offices, Conference Rooms, Workstations, Break Room, Lobby, Training Rooms, and the Dispatch Area. Additionally, the Business Interiors’ team sourced a media backdrop with the police department's seal, United States flags, Alabama State flags, and faux plants and planters.

Business Interiors is pleased to announce that Allie Bice has been promoted to Chief Financial Officer.

A 2015 graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, Allie became a CPA in 2017 and entered the furniture industry in 2019 as the CFO of Office Environments. Following the acquisition of OE by BI in 2022, Allie stayed on with Business Interiors as our Assistant CFO where she worked alongside BI CFO Jack Womack.

Allie is a recent graduate of MillerKnoll’s NextGen leadership program, where she further honed her management skills. She is a valuable part of the Business Interiors’ team, and we are thrilled that she continues to grow her career with BI.

This month we recognize and applaud the work of Samantha Sierra, Client Services | Manager in our Pensacola showroom. Samantha has been with BI for just over two years, having started with Office Environments just before OE was acquired by BI.

Samantha wears many hats, including Designer and Project Manager for our Pensacola team, and she has been an integral part of BI’s success in that market, working alongside BI Client Advisor Nichole Colony and Client Services | Manager extraordinaire Beth McGraw.

Business Interiors and MillerKnoll had the pleasure of participating in TWO interior design student events in the past seven days.

First up, IIDA Alabama held their annual Student Day, a full-day event that included speakers, breakout sessions, and a Vendor + Career Fair that included a dozen local A+D firms and over twenty manufacturers and dealers. Student Day hosted over 150 students this year from Samford University, Auburn University, The University of Alabama, the University of North Alabama, and Mississippi State University.

BI Client Advisor Maryl Stone and MillerKnoll Market Development Executive Kristen Marcus ran our booth while BI’s Mark Griffo “looked busy” working the room, stopping just in time to jump in the photo.

Second up was the Auburn University Interior Design Program’s annual Product Fair, a must-attend event for AU’s interior design students. Manufacturer reps from across the southeast were in attendance, as well as strong representation from Alabama’s dealers.

This time, BI Client Advisor, the industry-famous and crowd favorite, Debbie Caldwell, joined Kristen Marcus and Mark Griffo in running our booth. BI Client Advisor + Principal Valerie Allen (and AU Interior Design graduate) joined the team as well, but it was she who was out working the room when the team snapped a photo, so, through the magic of Photoshop, we’ve made sure she’s represented here as the star that she is.

In October 2023, the team at Eventive Sports moved into their brand-new offices, a renovated space with a completely refreshed look and feel from their previous workspace.

Eventive Sport is a leading sports event management team headquartered in Birmingham that partners on events with the SEC, the PGA, the NCAA, IndyCar, and others. The company, formerly the Bruno Event Team, also underwent a name change and rebranding process, a refresh that fell in line with the opening of their new office.

Business Interiors recently hosted our annual Sales Conference. Each of BI’s dedicated Client Advisors met in Birmingham to celebrate our 2023 successes and prepare for 2024.

Thank you to our guest presenters, including MillerKnoll’s Kristen Marcus, Liz Cohen, Zachary Ryles, and Kristin Spencer, and to Philip Currie of JH Berry and Katy Lucas from Goodwyn Mills Cawood.

In between all the “conference-ing”, our team found time to travel to Tuscaloosa for the Auburn vs. Alabama men’s basketball game and attend an entertaining Murder Mystery Dinner at Galley & Garden restaurant, hosted by our friends from MillerKnoll.

Late this past summer, the The Salvation Army Greater Birmingham Area Command contacted Business Interiors and asked if BI would be a participating Corporate Sponsor in their 2023 Angel Tree Program, a Christmas campaign that provides gifts and toys to Birmingham-area children in need.

We were honored to accept the opportunity and agreed to sponsor 50 children. BI individuals, teams, and groups within our Birmingham showroom sponsored just over half of that total. The remainder were sponsored by our industry friends and partners, from manufacturer reps to interior designers to installers and more, who answered our Call for Sponsors. ❤️

The Angel Tree Program serves nearly 3,000 children in Birmingham and surrounding areas. While our sponsorship effort this year was just a very small portion of that total number, it was our pleasure to be a part of a greater effort, and we are already looking forward to participating next year. 🎄🎁

The exchange was, as always, a sweet success, with dozens of holiday cookies brought in for swapping. In between nom noms, attendees took a break from serious design work to craft take-home holiday pinecone gnomes and paper snowflakes. 🍪🎄❄️

The food, desserts, drinks, and wine were plentiful, and, with dozens and dozens of oils to choose from, everyone had a blast mixing the perfect scent for their take-home candle. Just in time for the holidays. 🎄✨

On June 26th, 2019, Baptist Health Care formally announced the planning, construction, and opening of a new state-of-the-art hospital in Pensacola, Florida; a $650 million project, located on a 57-acre campus, to include the 10-story, 264-bed Baptist Hospital, the six-story, 178,000-square-foot Bear Family Foundation Health Center, and the 48,000-square-foot Baptist Behavioral Health Unit.

Fast forward to September 2023, and Pensacola’s Baptist Health Care Brent Lane campus is officially open.

Business Interiors is proud to have worked with Baptist Health Care, Gresham Smith, and Meadows and Ohly on this outstanding project.

BI was tasked with providing solutions for all patient-facing clinical areas. The scope included the hospital’s main lobby, waiting areas, patient rooms, lab, pharmacy, and behavioral health areas.

Of the 264 patient beds, 54 are in the intensive care unit, 198 are medical/surgical, and there are 12 labor and delivery suites. Patient rooms are spacious, private, and designed to be comfortable for family and visitors. The Behavioral Health Unit maintains 72 beds for adults and children needing inpatient treatment. The Bear Family Foundation Health Center is home to the Baptist Cancer Institute, Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute, Baptist Medical Group, and other offices.

The entire campus is designed to be patient-first, with a focus on patient and visitor comfort. Equal focus was placed on hospital staff space utilization, response time, and efficiency, allowing for a healthy, modern healthcare space. The hospital serves Escambia County and the surrounding area and is one of the most modern hospital campuses in the U.S.

Yesterday afternoon, we welcomed three of our favorite faces from MillerKnoll: R.J. Stelter, MillerKnoll’s Vice President of Distribution Channels & Dealer Development, Liz Cohen, Southeast Regional Sales Director, and our local MillerKnoll Market Development Executive Kristen Marcus.

MillerKnoll is steadfast in the support of their dealer partners, and R.J. and Liz's visit from Chicago and Atlanta, respectively, to Birmingham shows their dedication to BI’s success.

R.J., Liz, and Kristen hosted a Dealer Townhall for all BI employees, including everyone in our Huntsville, Montgomery, Pensacola, Tallahassee, and Gainesville markets. BI President Steve Groover kicked off the introductions, and then R.J. and Liz stepped in on behalf of the MillerKnoll team to cheer BI’s successes, thank all BI employees for their hard work, and give us glimpses as to all the continued support tools that MillerKnoll has in store for their entire dealer network.

The Construction Specifications Institute of Huntsville (CSI) recently hosted their monthly meeting and project tour at the new Space Camp Operations Building at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Business Interiors was proud to have worked on this project, and we were happy to be a participating sponsor of CSI’s meeting.

The tour was led by Robin Soprano, the Vice President of Space Camp, and included a walk-through of the new Operations Building as well as a tour of the camp simulators at Astrotek.

Thank you to the dozens of architects, designers, and construction professionals for attending and to CSI for hosting.
Unrelated to furniture…

Space Camp was founded in 1982 and operates year-round for students 9–18 years old. Students are taught STEM subjects through astronaut training techniques; they train in simulators used by NASA; and they bunk in beds constructed to recreate the experience of being on the International Space Station.

For the movie buffs out there, scenes from the 1986 movie “Space Camp,” which featured the young actors Larry B. Scott, Kelly Preston, Lea Thompson, Tate Donovan, and a very young Joaquin Phoenix (credited then as Leaf Phoenix), were filmed at Space Camp in Huntsville. Both the training facility and many of the actors have come a long way since then.

More than 900,000 trainees have graduated from Space Camp, including European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and NASA astronauts Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Dr. Kate Rubins, Dr. Serena Auñón-Chancellor, and Christina Koch.

BI Client Advisors Chelsea Falkner and Maryl Stone spent last week in Chicago, joining with MillerKnoll dealer partners from around North America.

The Purpose: an immersive product training experience for MillerKnoll’s collection of brands.

Not only did Chelsea and Maryl spend plenty of time in both the Herman Miller and Knoll showrooms, but they also participated in an array of collaborative and peer-to-peer learning sessions that focused on the countless MillerKnoll solutions available to our clients.

Both left invigorated and ready to get back home to our Birmingham and Huntsville markets, dedicated to providing the best service in the industry.

Business Interiors is pleased to announce Kristen Marcus as the new MillerKnoll Market Development Executive. As a knowledgeable design and sales leader, Kristen will be an integral part of MillerKnoll and Business Interiors’ continued focus on client engagement, problem solving, and account development.

Kristen brings to the role a wealth of capabilities, having over a decade of experience in design and sales, including previous experience working at Business Interiors. She is a 2013 graduate of the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Human and Environmental Services with a focus in Interior Design.

She will be covering the MillerKnoll dealers located in Alabama, Mississippi, and the west Florida Panhandle, including Business Interiors’ showrooms in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Pensacola.

Please join us in wishing our friend and colleague Laurence Signaigo a happy retirement! 🎉

As a designer with BI, Laurence has worked on countless projects throughout his twenty-two-year tenure with the company, and he has been an integral part of many of our project teams.

Laurence’s first career was in banking, but he made the switch to interior design after graduating from Samford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design in 1996. Not too long afterwards, he found himself in the world of contract furniture.

In early 2001, Laurence met with Business Interiors’ late founder Alan Pizzitola for an “interview” at Birmingham’s The Original Pancake House. The rest was history. 🥞

Laurence is a Registered Interior Designer in Alabama, a longtime member of IIDA Alabama, and an invaluable part of BI. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors... even the ones that may lead him back to Business Interiors from time to time. 😉 (As everyone in the industry knows, you never really leave the furniture business!)
