Great event, super partners. Gratifying to see such sustained support for Turkey Creek Nature Preserve!

Thank you so much to everyone that came out to make this year’s Darter Dash the most successful yet! This event would not have been possible without all of the incredible volunteers that worked so hard to assist with everything from making breakfast (so good!), to parking, course setup, and clean up. We had an incredible, hardworking crew from Birmingham Ultra Trail Society, Southern Environmental Center’s Jr Board, and Friends of Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. Thank you for your time, good spirits, and hardwork! Most importantly of all, we owe a HUGE dept of gratitude to our race coordinators, Jenny Rankin and Olivia Affuso. For 6 years, Jenny has worked tirelessly to make this event a truely unique, fun, and impactful fundraiser for the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. This event is not a one day commitment, but a year long effort, and it simply would not happen without her dedication! Thank you all so much! We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Turkey Creek summer intern Katherine Woody. Thanks for your hard work, and we look forward to seeing you back at Birmingham-Southern College this Fall!

2021 Summer Intern Spotlight: Our intern, Katherine, is a rising senior at Birmingham-Southern College, where she studies sociology and Spanish. Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, Katherine was awarded the superlative of Worst Driver by her high school peers in the class of 2018. She enjoys working at Turkey Creek because it gives her the opportunity to work outside in nature and to learn about many of the incredible species that call Turkey Creek their home. In her free time, Katherine enjoys painting and caring for her pet snails, Micheal and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Katherine internship has been made possible with funding support from CAWACO RC&D. Through this program she has gained real world experience and connections to support her future career goals. Furthermore, while at Turkey Creek, she has provided invaluable support with educational programming, Preserve maintenance, and project implementation. Thank you Katherine for dedicating your summer to helping Turkey Creek and CAWACO RC&D for making this all possible!

In partnership with USDA & Jones Valley Teaching Farm, we recently installed a Rain Garden opposite Woodlawn High School. The plants were propagated at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, and will help filter storm water runoff flowing into Village Creek.

Thanks to our friends at CAWACO for underwriting our summer internship program Turkey Creek Nature Preserve!

We are SO very excited to introduce our 2021 Summer Interns: Hannah, Olivia, and Katherine. They all come from different background and are perusing different career paths, but the one thing they all have in common is that they love Turkey Creek and they have shown great enthusiasm for helping to care for it (even when that means doing hard, dirty, work in heat of summer)!

The help of these wonderful college students has been made possible with the generous support of Cawaco RC&D. This internship program not only provides students with an amazing opportunity to see how much work goes into managing a non-profit nature preserve, but it also give our operation the help we need during our busiest season.

Thank you all for your commitment to Turkey Creek for the summer, there is no doubt their hard work will make a long lasting impacts we will all be able to enjoy!

Our Story

The Southern Environmental Center (SEC) at Birmingham-Southern College is both a top field trip destination and a resource for urban sustainability throughout the region. The Center’s Interactive Museum, GeoDome Theater & EcoScape Garden on campus host 20,000 visitors every year https://www.bsc.edu/sec/visit.html SEC also provides educational programs at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, a 466 acre Forever Wild property located within a short drive from Birmingham https://turkeycreeknp.com/programming/ The Southern Environmental Center’s Interactive Museum is the only museum of its kind in the nation: an interactive ‘eco’ museum & meeting space built from recycled materials and constructed on top of a re-purposed college swimming pool. It provides an ideal setting for field trips, birthday parties, or corporate retreats. Combine your visit with a tour of our sensory EcoScape garden filled with recycled art sculptures and year round color, and prepare yourself for jaw dropping drone & GoPro video coverage of Alabama’s natural wonders in our GeoDome Theater.

Text and illustration by Mikhaila Markham: Want to see what environmental racism looks like? Shelby County is home to over 900,000 Tennesseans, and about 52% of those residents are Black. Our county is also a hub for many major industries including cargo carriers, a petroleum refinery, and petrochemical storage facilities, just to name a few. All of these industries emit toxins, and like most urban locations in the U.S., these facilities are primarily clustered in Black neighborhoods. In 2014, researchers examined the relationship of racial composition and cancer risks from air toxins right here in Shelby County. The authors concluded that Black concentrated areas carry 6% more cancer risk than white concentrated areas. The distribution of high traffic roads and industrial facilities (all noted in this illustration) caused the greatest disparities. In the ongoing fight for environmental justice, how can we justify running a crude oil pipeline through predominantly Black neighborhoods like Westwood, Whitehaven, and Boxtown? These residents are already exposed to higher rates of pollution and increased risk of illness. Despite what the oil and gas industry wants you to believe, pipeline leaks and oil spills happen all the time. We don’t need more of these toxins in Memphis — especially not in Black communities. Please write to the Memphis City Council and Shelby County Commission and ask them to oppose the Byhalia Pipeline. Also, please write to President Joe Biden and ask him to rescind the Byhalia Pipeline permit. I’m a big fan of the tight knit community of environmentalists that I’m seeing on this page. I would love to further the conversation around the environment and recommend the upcoming Netflix documentary called “Kiss the Ground.” I actually just watched the official movie trailer on YouTube and was fascinated by its solution for climate. Directors and Josh and Rebecca Tickell brought together familiar faces like Woody Harrelson and Ian Somerhalder to present the idea of regenerative farming. This will allow for us to remove excess carbon dioxide from the air and bring it into the soil, which creates healthier crops and ecosystems. I’m excited to join the film’s global watch party for when it starts streaming next week on September 22nd!
Join us April 15th for a chance to see me in costume!
