In 1974 Harald zur Hausen suggested that human papilloma virus, HPV, could give rise to cervical cancer. His work led to the development of a vaccine against the disease.

At the time zur Hausen's idea challenged the common wisdom, as most researchers thought that cervical cancer was caused by the herpes simplex virus. However, despite the doubts of his peers, zur Hausen worked patiently trying to prove his hypothesis.

After 10 years of diligent research, he was proved right. His discovery showed that two types of HPV virus were responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases.
