The Copper Queen Library is located at 6 Main Street in Old Bisbee, Bisbee, AZ, and is open Mon-Tue 12-7pm & Wed-Fri 10am-5pm. The CQL Annex is located in the San Jose neighborhood of Bisbee, at 519 W. Melody Lane, in the BUSD District building. The Annex is open We, Th, 10 am--3 pm, and Fri 12-5 pm.

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the day that United States troops proclaimed the freedom of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, in 1865—two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Prior to June 19, many enslavers were aware of the Emancipation Proclamation. But it wasn’t until General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to read Order No. 3 that the Union Army announced it would enforce the proclamation. With that act, freedom for more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state was affirmed.

This booklet, in the collections of our Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, was produced in December 1862 for Union soldiers to read and distribute.

For : On June 19, 1865, two months after the Confederacy surrendered and more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops finally arrived in Texas, the westernmost Confederate state, and spread the word there that freedom was the law of the land.

About 70 years later, workers from the Federal Writers' Project arm of the Works Progress Administration started traveling around the U.S. collecting the stories of elderly Americans who still had firsthand accounts of being enslaved. Many of the people who were interviewed were also photographed. The Library has preserved these stories and images.

This photo is of Betty Simmons, who said she was more than 100 years old when she was interviewed in 1937 in Beaumont, Texas. She said she was married during slave times, and widowed, but was very happy that freedom came when it did because her enslavers were preparing to put her 3-year-old child to work in the fields.

Bisbee Bus Pride Parade 2026 Reroute

In order to continue serving people in the area, we will:

-Detour through Hwy 80 on Northbound and Southbound routes within the permitted parade hours.
-Our first stop of the day will be adjusted to 9:36am at Lyric Plaza (using the NB stop)
-The route will return to its regular schedule as of the 11:18 Am SB stop at City Hall
-Adjusted Schedules will be printed and placed in buses

During the adjusted schedule hours, we CANNOT schedule any deviations or CFP's along the parade route. Once the regular schedule is resumed after 11:18 AM, deviations and CFP's can be scheduled as normal.
