Today for California Mosquito Control Awareness Week day four, it’s time to bring attention to the reason behind mosquito control as a whole: disease.

Mosquitoes transmit several types of diseases and parasites, including some that can be deadly. Mosquitoes exist in almost every corner of the earth and California is home to over 50 different species of mosquitoes! And of these 50 several can transmit diseases like West Nile, dengue, malaria, and more.

Although only about 3% of all known mosquitoes are of human health importance, they’re still the world’s deadliest animal. The World Health Organization estimates there are more than 700,000 deaths from mosquito-borne illnesses every year, worldwide. This figure doesn’t include survivors whose lives may be upturned from severe complications, or even animals who are affected or killed by mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes, besides humans, kill more people than any other animal combined. This makes mosquito prevention one of the most important things every person can contribute to, for themselves and others.
