The Owens Valley is an arid valley in the Eastern Sierra of southeastern California in the United States. The Owens River flows through the 75-mile long valley bounded by the Inyo Mountains on the east, the Coso Range on the southeast, and the Sierra Nevada Range on the west. Mount Whitney rises majestically over 14,000 feet with the floor of the Owens Valley resting at 4,000 feet in elevation mak

ing the the valley one of the deepest valleys in the United States. The bed of Owens Lake, now a dry alkali flat, sits on the southern end of the valley. One-third of the water used by the City of Los Angeles comes from the Owens Valley through the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The Owens Valley Indian Water Commission is committed to protecting the waters of the Owens Valley and works with the support of the three member tribes to carry out the mission of protecting the precious water that sustains all life.

Last Thursday during our Wellbriety gathering, our group had the opportunity to harvest some of our beautiful amaranth seeds. Amaranth is a meaningful plant that can be used in many different ways, making this a wonderful hands-on learning experience. One of our Steward, Amber, is always looking for positive, educational, and engaging activities for our Thursday Wellbriety groups. We love seeing everyone come together, stay connected, and build a deeper appreciation for our plants, land, and traditional knowledge. These gatherings are about more than learning they’re about creating positive connections, sharing knowledge, and supporting one another along the journey of sobriety. We’re proud of everyone who continues to show up, learn, and grow together. ❤️🌿

It was an honor to connect with Cindy and relatives from East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice on their way back to LA. I shared a brief history, they toured the Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center, and then I had a chance to take them out to visit Three Creeks.
We love being in community with good relatives who have stood alongside us over the years, both in LA and here in Payahuunadü. Grateful for these relationships, the ways we continue to show up for one another, and the work we do together toward healthy homelands.

🌱 **Indigenous Futures Society: Nation Builders is coming to Payahuunadü!**

We’re excited to gather Indigenous young leaders (ages 16–30) for time on the land, meaningful learning, and connection with local Tribal knowledge keepers, Elders, and special guests.

Together, we’ll deepen relationships, rekindle our responsibilities to the land, and imagine the future we want to build—grounded in water, fire, and food 💧🔥🌱

This will be a space to learn from the land and from the people who have cared for it since time immemorial, share knowledge and experiences, and build connections with other Indigenous young leaders.

🏕️ **Overnight camping on the land is welcome!**

If you’re an Indigenous young leader interested in joining us, **sign up today!**

✨ More details coming soon.

Thank you all for your many prayers, calls, texts and support over these last few days of facing fire. We are still under evacuation notice, and grateful to Cultural Center who is opening their doors to host our Water Themed Zine Making Workshop this Saturday with Alexia Leclercq! Please join us for the water in this big time of fire.

Sending prayers to all beings still being affected by this fire, and all those facing and fighting it 🙏💦✊🏼
