Back-to-school season is here! 🏫

Before students return, schools should flush taps and drinking fountains that sat unused over the summer. It’s a simple step that helps clear stagnant water from pipes and gets the building’s water ready for the year ahead.

Facility crews can find guidance on properly flushing school water systems here: https://deq.nd.gov/leadinschools/default.aspx

If your home uses a private well, regular testing is the best way to know what’s in your drinking water. Unlike public water systems, private wells are the responsibility of the well owner. DEQ has resources to help you get started. 💧

⚠️ Harmful Algal Bloom Alert ⚠️

Harmful algal bloom advisories are in effect for Devils Lake, Lake Brekken, Lake Darling, Lake Tschida, and Lake Ilo. Warnings are in effect for Bowman-Haley Dam, South Golden Lake, and Warsing Dam.

If the water looks green, blue-green, or has a thick surface scum, stay out. Harmful algal blooms can produce toxins that may pose health risks to people and animals.

Avoid contact with algae-covered water. Report suspected blooms: 701-328-5210 or [email protected]

When in doubt, stay out.

Then vs. Now 🔬

A lot has changed over the years, but one thing hasn't: our commitment to protecting North Dakota's environment.

Take a look at how the NDDEQ Laboratory has evolved from its original space to the facility it is today. As technology and science continue to evolve, so do the spaces that support this important work.
