Train vs. Semi | Hamberg Area, June 11, 2026

Troopers responded to a crash involving a semi and a westbound freight train at a rural railroad crossing near Hamberg.

The semi was struck while attempting to cross the tracks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Remember:
-Trains can take more than a mile to stop.
-You may see a train before you hear it.
-Never try to “beat” a train at a crossing.
-Always look both directions, even at familiar crossings.

HIGH WINDS + EMPTY TRAILER = ROLLOVER

June 10, 2026 - North of Hillsboro, an empty commercial motor vehicle combination was traveling on I-29 through a construction zone when strong winds caused the vehicle to overturn.

The combination rolled onto its driver’s side and slid across the roadway before coming to rest in the median. The driver was wearing a seat belt and sustained only a minor injury.

Troopers on scene reported severe wind conditions, including blowing dust that significantly reduced visibility and trees bent at extreme angles.

Northbound I-29 was temporarily closed between mile markers 104 and 111 from 8:07 p.m. to 8:33 p.m. while the vehicle was recovered.

High-profile vehicles, especially those operating empty, are particularly vulnerable during high wind events. If strong winds are forecast, plan ahead, slow down, and consider delaying travel until conditions improve.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE THIS EVENING - TUESDAY JUNE 9 -

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across portions of North Dakota this afternoon and evening. Hazards may include destructive wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes.

Now is the time to review your plans. Heed watches and warnings, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and know where you will take shelter if a warning is issued.

If you have outdoor events planned this evening, consider rescheduling and identifying a safe shelter location. If you planned to travel through affected areas, consider alternate travel plans or delaying your trip.

High winds can be especially dangerous for high-profile vehicles, including semis, buses, RVs, campers, and vehicles pulling trailers. Drivers should closely monitor weather conditions and be prepared to adjust travel plans.

Plan ahead before the storms arrive.
