Meet Jacob Mertz, a senior bridge inspector with our Bridge Division. He's been with NDDOT since 2004 and he's a huge hockey and football fan. His favorite team is the Las Vegas Raiders. (Raider Nation For Life!) As part of his job, Jacob travels all over the state inspecting bridges to ensure their safety.

"I enjoy talking with coworkers and being part of team that is changing our inspections for the better," he says.

A crew from the Grand Forks District recently did some concrete pavement restoration work on I-29. These CPR projects fix broken or cracked seals, grind bumps for a smoother ride and seal joints to keep water out. Thanks for your hard work under the hot sun and for sending us the pics, Grand Forks!

MYTH: Engineers just draw roads.
FACT: Professional engineers analyze traffic patterns, crash history, drainage, soils, environmental impacts, future growth, and public input before a road is ever built.

MYTH: Once a road is built, the engineer's job is done.
FACT: Engineers continue monitoring pavement performance, bridge conditions, traffic operations, crash trends, and maintenance needs throughout the life of the roadway.

MYTH: Engineering is mostly math.
FACT: Math is important, but engineers also rely on communication, teamwork, public engagement, creativity, problem-solving, and sound judgment to deliver safe transportation projects.

MYTH: Anyone can call themselves an engineer.
FACT: Licensed Professional Engineers (PEs) must meet education, experience, and examination requirements and are legally accountable for protecting public health, safety, and welfare.

Happy Professional Engineers Day to the dozens of PEs who work to improve transportation in North Dakota!
