Congratulations to Officers Joe Valdez and Billy Hutcherson on their recent graduation from the National Honor Guard Academy.

This specialized training provided advanced instruction in honor guard protocols, ceremonial procedures, and the traditions that honor those who have served before us. The knowledge and skills gained through this academy will strengthen the Bixby Police Department Honor Guard and help ensure we continue to represent our department and community with professionalism, pride, and respect.

We are proud of Officers Valdez and Hutcherson for their commitment to excellence and their dedication to bringing this valuable training back to our agency.

Last week, the Bixby Police Department had the privilege of recognizing a true young hero, Ryker Yocham, for his courageous actions and quick thinking.

During a recent ceremony, Ryker was presented with a Life Saving Award from his Boy Scout group. In recognition of his extraordinary actions, he was also awarded a Bixby Police Department Life Saving Pin and a Command Coin presented by Chief Todd Blish.

Ryker earned this recognition after observing an infant fall into a swimming pool. Without hesitation, he immediately jumped into the water and rescued the child, helping prevent what could have been a tragic outcome.

Acts of bravery and selflessness know no age, and Ryker’s actions serve as an outstanding example of courage, leadership, and community responsibility. The Bixby Police Department is incredibly proud of Ryker and honored to recognize him for his heroic efforts.

Day 5 marked the final day of the 2026 Junior Police Academy, and what a week it has been!

Cadets started the morning by taking on the CLEET Physical Agility Course one final time, giving them the opportunity to improve their times from Day 1. More impressive than the times themselves was the growth in teamwork, motivation, and camaraderie displayed throughout the course. The support and encouragement the cadets showed one another was a testament to how much they have grown over the past week.

Cadets then received a presentation and demonstration on another tool available to law enforcement officers, the Taser. And before anyone asks, no children were tased or harmed during the demonstration!

Following the presentation, cadets participated in a color run that tested their memory, teamwork, communication, and agility. The event provided a fun and challenging way to apply many of the skills they had developed throughout the academy.

After lunch, cadets received instruction from an Oklahoma County Deputy on the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. They then participated in the Simulated Impaired Driving Experience cart, where they wore impairment goggles designed to mimic the effects of intoxication while navigating a golf cart through an obstacle course. The exercise provided a powerful firsthand look at how impaired driving affects reaction time, coordination, and decision-making.

The week concluded with graduation and awards as we recognized the hard work, dedication, and accomplishments of all 17 cadets.

Thank you to the officers, deputies, instructors, community partners, and volunteers who helped make this year’s Junior Police Academy a success. Most importantly, thank you to our cadets for their positive attitudes, hard work, and willingness to learn. We hope each of you leaves with a better understanding of law enforcement, stronger leadership skills, and memories that will last a lifetime.

For Immediate Release:

On Saturday, August 2, 2025, officers and detectives with the Bixby Police Department responded to Saint Francis Hospital regarding an infant who had been admitted with injuries consistent with child abuse. A criminal investigation was immediately initiated in coordination with an investigation by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Tragically, on Monday, August 4, 2025, the 16-day-old infant died from the injuries that were sustained.

Through a diligent, extensive, and complex investigation, investigators identified the infant's father, Brandon Wade Watkins of Bixby, as the primary suspect in the crime.

On June 5, 2026, Brandon Watkins was arrested by the Bixby Police Department on a warrant issued through Tulsa County.

The Bixby Police Department extends it’s thanks to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office for their assistance and collaboration throughout this investigation and in advancing the case through the criminal justice process to seek justice in this senseless crime.

As this matter is now pending before the courts, no further information will be released at this time.

Day 4 of the 2026 Junior Police Academy challenged our cadets to put both their safety knowledge and investigative skills to work.

The day was spent at the Bixby Police Range, where cadets received classroom instruction on firearm safety, range procedures, and the responsibilities that come with handling fi****ms. After completing their classroom training, cadets moved to the range for a hands-on shooting session utilizing both steel and paper targets.

After lunch, cadets returned to discover they had been assigned a mock crime scene investigation. Working as a team, they processed the scene, collected evidence, interviewed witnesses, developed leads, and ultimately solved the case, ending with the arrest of the suspect.

Today’s activities gave cadets a firsthand look at two critical components of law enforcement: the importance of firearm safety and proficiency, and the detailed investigative work required to solve crimes. We are proud of the effort, teamwork, and problem-solving skills our cadets continue to demonstrate as we head into the final day of the academy.

Day 3 of the 2026 Junior Police Academy is complete, and our cadets are officially halfway through the week!

The morning started with some fun and competition during PT as cadets faced off in a full-court dodgeball tournament before loading up on a bus and heading to Tulsa Tech. There, cadets had the opportunity to train on the Multiple Interactive Learning Objectives (MILO) simulator alongside the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office. Cadets learned firearm safety fundamentals while sharpening their decision making skills, to include defending themselves from zombies!

After lunch, cadets returned to the classroom for a presentation from the Detective Division covering crime scene processing, investigations, and the critical role evidence plays in solving crimes. Cadets got an inside look at the detailed work detectives perform behind the scenes on a daily basis.

They closed out the day performing practicals for the traffic stop class they learned about yesterday.

Another outstanding day of learning, teamwork, and hands on experience for these cadets, and we’re excited to finish the second half of the week strong!

Day 2 of the 2026 Junior Police Academy was packed with learning and real world experiences for our cadets at the Bixby Police Department.

Cadets started the morning with stretching and physical training before spending time with our SWAT Team for demonstrations and hands-on activities. The day then moved into classroom instruction focused on driving safety, internet safety and the importance of protecting not only themselves, but also their friends and family from online predators and scams. Our detectives discussed how frequently crimes involving the internet impact our community and the important role awareness plays in prevention.

To wrap up the day, cadets received exciting real-world demonstrations from our K9 and Drone Units, giving them a closer look at the tools and technology officers use to help keep the community safe.

Another great day of learning, teamwork, leadership, and great food cooked just for us is complete, and we’re proud of the effort these cadets continue to show each day!

⚠️ TRAFFIC ADVISORY ⚠️

The Bixby Police Department is advising motorists of a major raised section of the roadway affecting the westbound lanes just east of 151st Street and Harvard.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has been notified and crews are en route to repair the issue.

Type III barricades have been placed in the area to help direct traffic and protect motorists and workers on scene.

Please use caution, slow down, and pay close attention to traffic cones, barricades, and construction personnel while traveling through the area. Expect delays and consider alternate routes if possible.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while repairs are being made.

Day 1 of the 2026 Junior Police Academy is in the books for the Bixby Police Department, and our cadets started the day strong by taking on the official CLEET physical agility course!

Throughout the day, cadets learned squad organization, formations, teamwork, and participated in ice breakers designed to build communication and trust with one another. They also received valuable life-saving instruction from our EMS Chief.

The day wasn’t just about training, it was also about service. Cadets helped school staff move new TVs into classrooms, learning firsthand that law enforcement officers are also public servants who work to support their community in many different ways.

We’re proud of the effort, teamwork, and positive attitudes shown by all 18 cadets today and look forward to another great day tomorrow!
