Black Butte Ranch Police Department

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon — The Black Butte Ranch Police Department continues its commitment to keeping local roadways safe through increased traffic enforcement efforts conducted in recent weeks. Officers have focused on identifying traffic violations and addressing behaviors that contribute to crashes and injuries.

These enforcement activities are part of an ongoing public safety campaign designed to raise awareness about the importance of seat belt use and proper child passenger safety. Wearing a seat belt and ensuring children are secured in the appropriate restraint system remain among the most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a traffic crash.

Working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Black Butte Ranch Police Department encourages all drivers and passengers to make safety their top priority every time they travel. By buckling up and following traffic laws, motorists can help protect themselves, their passengers, and everyone who shares Oregon’s roadways.

🚔 CLICK IT OR TICKET 🚔

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon — The Black Butte Ranch Police Department is joining the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign to remind drivers and passengers that seat belts save lives.

During the upcoming enforcement period, drivers can expect increased law enforcement presence focused on seat belt compliance. If officers observe drivers or passengers not wearing a seat belt, they may be stopped and cited.

Wearing your seat belt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself in a crash. Whether you’re traveling across town or across the state, buckle up every trip, every time, and in every seat.

✅ Shoulder belt across the chest — not under the arm or behind the back
✅ Lap belt low across the hips — not across the stomach
✅ Everyone buckled up — front and back seats alike

Seat belts remain the best defense against impaired, distracted, and aggressive drivers. While seat belt use has increased over the years, nearly half of all passenger vehicle fatalities still involve unrestrained occupants.

Avoid the consequences — buckle up before you drive. A seat belt can keep you safely inside the vehicle during a crash, while being ejected is often fatal. Airbags alone are not enough protection without a seat belt.

Law enforcement writes tickets to save lives.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 14, 2026

Black Butte Ranch Police Department

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon —The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging drivers to take an active role in roadway safety by embracing and sharing a simple but critical message: Eyes Forward. Don’t Drive Distracted!

Distracted driving includes any activity that diverts attention from driving, with cell phone use being one of the most common and dangerous forms. Whether texting, scrolling, or engaging with apps, taking your eyes or mind off the road puts everyone at risk — including other drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

The consequences are significant. According to NHTSA, between 2020 and 2024, distraction-affected crashes claimed 16,482 lives and left approximately 1.6 million people injured. In 2024 alone, 3,208 people were killed in crashes involving at least one distracted driver — accounting for 8% of all traffic fatalities — with an estimated 315,167 additional injuries reported.

Safe driving demands full attention at all times. Drivers are encouraged to adopt simple, effective habits to eliminate distractions and help create safer roadways for everyone:
• Pull over and park in a safe location before reading or sending text messages
• Designate a passenger to handle calls or messages while driving
• Avoid social media use or any form of messaging behind the wheel
• Activate “Do Not Disturb” mode to silence notifications
• Place your phone out of reach — such as in the trunk, glove box, or back seat

Using a phone while driving is not just risky — it can be deadly. Committing to phone-free driving means keeping your hands on the wheel, your eyes on the road, and your focus where it belongs.

Remember: Eyes Forward. Don’t Drive Distracted!

Follow-Up: Central Oregon MATT Spring Break Blitz – March 25–27, 2026

Deputies, Officers, and Troopers from the five Deschutes County law enforcement agencies, the Oregon State Police – Bend Area Command, and the Oregon State Police High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Unit came together from March 25–27, 2026, for the Central Oregon Multi-Agency Traffic Team (MATT) Spring Break Blitz. The coordinated traffic safety effort focused on promoting safe driving behaviors during one of the busiest travel periods of the season.

As a direct result of these combined efforts, no fatal or serious-injury crashes occurred during the blitz timeframe.

In addition to high-visibility patrols throughout Central Oregon, enforcement concentrated on behaviors most commonly associated with severe and fatal crashes. Over the three-day operation:

• 13 alleged DUII drivers were arrested and removed from our roadways. • More than 550 traffic stops were conducted. • 275 violation citations were issued. • 473 warnings were provided.

Breakdown of stop-related violations: • 298 were speed-related. • 34 involved seatbelt or occupant-protection violations. • 128 involved lane-departure violations. • 36 involved distracted driving (cell phones). • 31 drivers contacted were operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

The Spring Break Blitz reflects the ongoing mission of the Central Oregon MATT, a multi-agency team dedicated to preventing fatal and serious-injury traffic crashes while working proactively to prevent them. By combining resources and expertise, MATT agencies strive to make Central Oregon’s roadways safer for families, visitors, and everyone who lives, works, and travels in our area.

Central Oregon law enforcement agencies and the Oregon State Police would like to thank the community for their continued support and ongoing commitment to safe driving. Together, we can reduce crashes, save lives, and ensure that everyone gets home safely.

🚓 Now Recruiting: On-Call Police Officers 🚓

The Black Butte Ranch Police Department is expanding its team and seeking a select group of DPSST-certified (or eligible) officers who want to stay engaged in law enforcement—without the demands of a full-time career. These on-call positions play a critical role in supporting patrol operations by filling open shifts, assisting during peak times, and helping ensure consistent public safety coverage throughout the Ranch.

This opportunity is ideal for recently retired officers or those transitioning out of full-time service who still want to maintain their certification, stay connected to the profession, and continue serving their community in a flexible, low-impact role. Officers from Central Oregon and across the state are encouraged to apply.

Join a small, highly collaborative, and community-oriented department serving the unique resort setting of Black Butte Ranch. With a strong focus on proactive policing, community interaction, and partnerships with surrounding agencies, this is a chance to continue making a difference—while enjoying one of Oregon’s most scenic environments.

Deschutes County Law Enforcement Agencies Relaunch MATT to Encourage Safe Driving and Reduce Crashes over Spring Break

Deschutes County, OR —Deschutes County law enforcement agencies, in partnership with regional police chiefs, are launching a Spring Break traffic safety campaign called the “Spring Break Blitz.” The effort encourages both residents and visitors to make safe driving decisions during the busy travel period, with the shared goal of ensuring everyone enjoys Spring Break and returns home safely. Officials emphasize the importance of proactive safety measures as the region sees an increase in visitors during this time.

The coordinated enforcement effort will take place from March 25–27, with increased patrols from officers, deputies, and troopers throughout Central Oregon. The blitz also marks the relaunch of the Central Oregon Multi-Agency Traffic Team (MATT), which unites all six Deschutes County law enforcement agencies along with the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC). Together, they aim to reduce serious and fatal crashes through a combination of education, outreach, and enforcement using a Safe System approach.

Authorities note that fatal and serious-injury crashes are rising across Oregon, with impaired driving playing a significant role in Deschutes County. The MATT will focus on reducing the “Fatal 5” behaviors—speeding, lack of seatbelt use, lane departures, impaired driving, and distracted driving (SOLID). Drivers are urged to make responsible choices, including avoiding impairment and distractions, obeying speed limits, and wearing seatbelts, while also considering safe alternatives to impaired driving.
