BEFD 4/13/26: Congratulations to Tyler Johnson for getting his Firefighter II Certification!!! This takes a lot of time and dedication and we are so grateful to Tyler for doing this to better serve our communities!

Firefighter II certification is an advanced, NFPA 1001-compliant program typically consisting of a 42-hour course focused on specialized, high-hazard firefighting tasks. It requires prior certification in Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations to qualify for state certification testing. Key training includes vehicle extrication, fire scene operations, and advanced tactics.

March 29, 2026***PRESS RELEASE***SUBJECT: Structure Fire in the Town of Mazomanie
DATE OF INCIDENT: March 28, 2026
At approximately 1806 CST on Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Black Earth Fire Department was dispatched to the 10 thousand block of Laws Drive in the Town of Mazomanie to a Delta level structure fire at a rural home. Due to the nature of this call, Dane County District One EMS (Mazomanie) and Mazomanie Fire Department were automatically paged to respond. First units arrived on scene approximately 8 min from time of page and reported fire showing from the west side of the home along with wood piles and foliage burning. Local Dane County Sherriff Office deputies on scene assisted evacuating the residents who were attempting to stop the fire spread. One resident was transported to a local hospital for suspected smoke inhalation. Black Earth Fire Department initially requested Cross Plains Fire Department to respond and upgraded their request to a mutual aid box alarm (MABAS) to the first level upon arrival. BEFD was assisted with firefighting operations, water supply, and EMS transport by these mutual aid departments. Initial fires were extinguished at approximately 1851 (+35min) and operations were continued to search and contain remaining hot spots. Initial reports and investigation indicate that the fire originated outside the home and had spread across foliage and wood piles adjacent to the home and ultimately inside the residence. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will be conducting further investigation of the source and conditions of the fire origination. Significant damage to the home has resulted in 3 persons and 1 pet to be displaced.Black Earth Fire Department would like to thank the following departments/agencies for their assistance: Dane County District One EMS, Mazomanie Fire Department, Dane County Sheriffs Office, Dane County Communications Center, Cross Plains Fire Department, Sauk City Fire Department, Middleton EMS, Middleton Fire Department, Arena Fire Department, Mount Horeb Fire Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Alliant Energy.
