The City of Asheville residents receive their water from 3 sources:

* The Burnett reservoir located in Black Mountain
* Bee Tree Lake located in Swannanoa
* Mills River

The water from these sources supplies the demand for the 125,000+ customers in Asheville and the surrounding areas. At each of these source waters is a water treatment facility with specially trained employees who make the water

safe for human consumption. Combined the 3 water treatment facilities produce an average of 20 million gallons per day (MGD). The North Fork water treatment facility produces an average of 15 MGD, William Debruhl produces 3 MGD, and the Mills River facility produces 2.5 MGD. Because Asheville is one the few municipalities in NC to have a completely protected watershed (22,000 acres), the quality of the natural untreated water is exceptional. The water treatment process varies with each facility because of the unique chemical make up of each of the source waters. * the water treatment process is outlined in the general information section
