Flat Creek Greenway Update (8/28/26)

We wanted to give a more in-depth update on the Flat Creek Greenway closure.

A section of the greenway was recently closed after damage along the streambank showed signs of possible further deterioration after recent storms. Because of the location and concerns about safety and liability, the most practical thing to do was close the area and put a detour in place while we figure out the best way to address the damage.

The Town has two separate projects for this area: a State-funded streambank project and a FEMA-funded project addressing the greenway trail itself. The streambank work will affect what ultimately happens with the trail, so the two projects have to be coordinated. The streambank project began before Hurricane Helene, with initial designs already underway, but the changing stream course means those plans now need to be significantly modified. Because multiple funding sources are being used for the repairs, the work and costs have to be carefully separated to make sure each source is being used appropriately and that we are not seeking funding for the same work twice. There are a lot of moving parts behind the scenes, and while that work may not be very visible or flashy, they are necessary steps when using outside funding sources.

There is still a lot that has to happen before we can get this area back open. Unfortunately, this isn't going to be a quick fix, and we don't have a firm timeline for reopening the greenway at this point. In the meantime, we have established a detour around the closed section so that the greenway can remain open and accessible to the community while the repairs are being evaluated and coordinated.

Thanks for your patience with us while we work to get this taken care of!

Our first hike of the 2026 Arm's Length Adventures Series is in the books! Today, we enjoyed an absolutely stunning hike to the summit(s) of Sam K**b.

Most of our remaining hikes in the series are full, but waitlists are very short! We also have plenty of room on our upcoming litter sweeps throughout town if you'd like to help us keep our green spaces clean! You can learn more and sign up for free today at www.townofblackmountain.org

We hope you'll join us in the great outdoors soon!

FLOWERS EVERYWHERE GARDEN FUNDRAISER, 2026

We are gathering for our annual Garden Party Fundraiser “Flowers Everywhere” on Sunday, August 30th from 4:30-7pm to celebrate renewal and flourishing in the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden.

Our Garden Party will be held in our very own Dr. John Wilson Community Garden at 99 White Pine Dr, Black Mountain. The event will feature live music from Becki and the Farm to Jazz, a locally sourced dinner, fresh jam tasting, pick your own flowers and bouquet making with Cindi Quay, medicinal tea tasting, cyanotype sun printing, and tours of the native pollinator garden with Emily Sampson and a tour of our Growing For Donation Vegetable Garden featuring crops from Utopian Seed Project!

Tickets
$40 in advance
$50 at the door
$25 student and needs-based tickets available

Tickets and more information at
https://bmtcommunitygardens.org/flowers-everywhere-2026-garden-party-fundraiser/

Your ticket purchase goes directly to supporting integral garden systems like our internship program, community education programs, tools and supplies, and garden infrastructure needs, so that we can continue to build local food sovereignty by growing food to donate at no cost to those friends and neighbors who need it most, and along the way educating others about gardening and growing community.

Whether you have been a community gardener here since the beginning, or you have never visited us prior and want to learn more, everyone is welcome!

Learn why the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden fills a vital, unique role in the Swannanoa River Valley and how you can help sustain our mission of growing and distributing locally grown, nutritious food to our community through our partnership with Bounty & Soul, while also building community. We are excited to share the bounty of the garden, celebrate successes, and take a look into the future. We look forward to seeing you there rain or shine!

We'd like to extend a huge thank you to local Eagle Scout, Amanda Latta, for choosing River Walk Park for her Eagle Scout Project!

Thanks to Amanda's hard work, River Walk Park now has a new picnic area, dog treat box, and a new bench for park users to enjoy! Amanda also made several environmental improvements by installing new birdhouses and planting over ten native trees throughout the park! It's incredible people like Amanda who ensure our parks and greenspaces are enjoyable for all walks of life for generations to come. If you see Amanda around town, please tell her thank you!
