Flat Creek Greenway Update (8/28/26)
We wanted to give a more in-depth update on the Flat Creek Greenway closure.
A section of the greenway was recently closed after damage along the streambank showed signs of possible further deterioration after recent storms. Because of the location and concerns about safety and liability, the most practical thing to do was close the area and put a detour in place while we figure out the best way to address the damage.
The Town has two separate projects for this area: a State-funded streambank project and a FEMA-funded project addressing the greenway trail itself. The streambank work will affect what ultimately happens with the trail, so the two projects have to be coordinated. The streambank project began before Hurricane Helene, with initial designs already underway, but the changing stream course means those plans now need to be significantly modified. Because multiple funding sources are being used for the repairs, the work and costs have to be carefully separated to make sure each source is being used appropriately and that we are not seeking funding for the same work twice. There are a lot of moving parts behind the scenes, and while that work may not be very visible or flashy, they are necessary steps when using outside funding sources.
There is still a lot that has to happen before we can get this area back open. Unfortunately, this isn't going to be a quick fix, and we don't have a firm timeline for reopening the greenway at this point. In the meantime, we have established a detour around the closed section so that the greenway can remain open and accessible to the community while the repairs are being evaluated and coordinated.
Thanks for your patience with us while we work to get this taken care of!
