Reminder: Per BRF city ordinance 10.3:
(3) DEPOSIT ON STREETS PROHIBITED. No person shall deposit or cause to be deposited any weeds, grass, leaves, plants, trees, shrubs, or other material or objects that may disrupt the storm water sewer system upon any alley, parkway, public place or street in the City.

Not only is this detrimental to the sewer system causing clogs and backups, but also very hazardous for motorcycles and bicycles as it causes the road surface to become slippery.

All yard waste can be disposed of properly behind the fairgrounds by the city street department's shop. This area is only for residents of BRF however; if you live outside of the city limits please check with your local township/municipality as to where you can dispose of your yard waste properly.

***UPDATE - BOTH INMATES THAT ESCAPED ARE IN CUSTODY. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED LATER.***

The two suspects below have escaped Columbia correctional Facility in Columbia County. Be on the lookout for these suspects as Newman reportedly has ties to the BRF area. DO NOT APPROACH them if you see them and immediately call 911 or the Jackson County Sheriff's office at 715-284-5357.

UPDATE - BOTH INMATES THAT ESCAPED ARE IN CUSTODY. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED LATER.

Additional information as of 7:20 pm on April 16th: This afternoon there was a single report from a citizen that stated they saw two people running through a field near a wooded area off of the interstate around County Road K. Numerous law enforcement officers responded to the area and a massive and thorough search was conducted. No evidence or indication of anyone in this area was found.

Deputies from Dane and Sauk County Sheriff’s Offices along with Lodi PD, State Patrol, DNR, and the U.S. Marshals assisted the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in this search. We utilized drones, an airplane, canine units, and thermal imagery units during this search.

The two escaped inmates remain at large and are considered dangerous. Although they have not been located there is information that these two escaped prisoners have traveled out of the immediate area. As this is a fluid investigation, we take threats to our community seriously and will investigate those credible leads.

The investigation continues and we will alert the public if any additional information comes to our attention.

Additional update: These individuals are considered dangerous. Anyone that has information regarding the whereabouts of these escaped suspects should immediately call law enforcement.

The immediate public around Portage is no longer in danger. We believe the suspects have traveled outside of Columbia County. The two inmates below are the two that are confirmed missing. Thank you to all the citizens that called and assisted.***

Report of inmate escape at Columbia Correctional Facility (CCI) please lock your doors, and stay home. See anyone suspicious call 911. This is an ongoing investigation. Both white males, James Robert Newman age 37 and Thomas E Deering age 46.

We agree whole-heartedly with the statements made by our law enforcement partners in Marshfield! Our officers want everyone to stay safe and healthy during this unprecedented time.

Quashing some rumors going around the community...

NO---we will not be kicking in doors if we think you are open for business and should not be

NO---we are not requiring you to carry a permit or letter from your employer telling us you are an essential worker (I can only speak on behalf of Marathon and Wood County law enforcment agencies)

NO---Just because you have a piece of paper saying you are essential does not mean you are an essential worker

NO---we will not be making random traffic stops to learn your business or travel destination.

NO---It is not our goal to arrest people and take them to jail if in violation of the #Saferathome order. Our goal is voluntary compliance and education should we have contact with you...but you could be arrested if you choose to not abide by our efforts to encourage and educate.

YES---it is DUMB to be out and about if unnecessary, unless you desire COVID-19 community spread, which could be catastrophic to your friends and family and long lasting in our community.

NO---it is not suggested by local health officials to have all the young people contract COVID-19 to build immunity while forcing only the vulnerable to take shelter

YES---we are begging you to take this serious

Please ask other COVID-19 related questions or rumors you are hearing and we will do our best to answer them. Thank you and be safe!!!

We all know that we received a significant amount of snow yesterday...but did you know that you have to have your sidewalks shoveled within 24 hours? Please be courteous to your neighbors and keep those sidewalks clear! Snow and ice are no fun to navigate on foot and even more hazardous for those in wheelchairs or otherwise impaired.
Thank you!!
The BRF city ordinance is copied and pasted below from the official website: www.blackriverfalls.us

8.06 SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL. (1) REQUIRED. The owner, occupant or person in
charge of every building, lot or part of a lot within the City fronting upon a public sidewalk shall
remove all snow and ice from said sidewalk within 24 hours from the time the snow ceases to
fall. When ice is formed on the sidewalk so that it cannot be removed, it shall be kept sprinkled
with ashes, salt, sand or like material.
(2) DEPOSIT ON STREETS PROHIBITED. No person shall deposit or cause to be
deposited any snow or ice upon any sidewalk, alley, parkway, public place or street in the City;
provided, however, that snow or ice removed from the sidewalk in front of or abutting any
premises or the premises which abut such sidewalk may be deposited on the parkway and, in the
event there is no parkway on the street fronting such premises prior to snow or ice being plowed,
windrowed and removed from the street by the City.
(3) REMOVAL BY CITY. If snow or ice is not removed from sidewalks or sprinkled,
as required by sub. (1) above, or if snow or ice is deposited on any sidewalk, alley, parkway,
public place or street in the City in violation of sub. (2) above, the City may remove or cause to
be removed all such snow or ice and the person in charge of the premises from which the snow
