As we share holiday posts this month, it is important to remember those who did not make it home to celebrate the season. Today we share this necktie and garter box set from the Elmer Miller collection. Miller, a Door County native, served as a Sergeant in the 22nd Tank Battalion 11th Armored Division during World War II. The box set was a Christmas gift sent overseas to Miller by his wife Lila. Sadly, Miller was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge, and this gift was returned to his wife. The collection also contains letters that Lila wrote to Elmer, that were returned after of his death. These letters describe her daily life while raising their daughter Maryanne, getting ready for Christmas, and expressing concern that she has not received a letter from him in a while.

Effective 12 July 2019, all actively serving members of the armed forces who have 16 or more years of service will no longer be able to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to their dependents. This new restriction was put in place per change 1 to DoDI 1341.13, Post-9/11 GI Bill, dated 12 July 2018.

As a result of this change, Wisconsin Army National Guard Soldiers are highly encouraged to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits as soon as they become eligible (i.e. have six or more years of service, at least one eligible dependent in DEERS, and no active flagging actions) to avoid missing out on this extremely generous family benefit.

To transfer your benefits go to: https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/

Badger Honor Flight!
06/19/2019

Badger Honor Flight!

Today marks 10 years since Badger Honor Flight was incorporated.

In May of 2009, a group of volunteers met to discuss the possibility of forming of a local Honor Flight hub in Madison, WI. The volunteers consisted of WI Dept. of Veteran Affairs personnel, members of local Veterans' groups, and others. Some of whom had participated as guardians on other WI Honor Flights. After several meetings at VFW Post 1318, they decided to form "Badger Honor Flight". This hub would primarily serve Veterans in Columbia, Dane, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Lafayette, Richland, Rock, Sauk, and parts of Dodge Counties.

With the assistance of local attorneys, fellow WI Honor Flight reps, and Honor Flight National reps, Badger Honor Flight was incorporated in WI on June 18, 2009.

We would like to recognize and thank the original Board of Directors who helped make this a reality.

Jeff Unger, Ray Perez, Vern Wendt, Elmer Foley, Chad Weisenel, Dawn Dommisse, Charlie Maurice, Bob Kelter, and Roger Boeker.

Since that date, we have taken over 3,100 Veterans on 36 flights for their "Trip of a Lifetime".

Thank you to everyone who has helped make these trips and BHF a huge success! We are always looking for more volunteers to help us continue our mission. Please sign up for our mailing list or check our website for openings.
