Black River/Evans Mills PD honored a village resident tonight at our February Board Meeting. On January 11th 2020, a 6 year old was missing from his house on Leray St. Robert Deronda, West St Black River, was out running in the village and was made aware of the incident by the NYSP searching in the area. Deronda was in the area on N Main St and ran to a wooded trail off West St after seeing something down river near the shoreline of the S Main St bridge. He met up with Chief Wood and advised after checking the area he did see the child by the waters edge. Chief Wood contacted the NYSP and JCSO units on the other side of the river by radio. Trooper Allen went to the river side and was able to locate the child. The child was evaluated by BR Ambulance and reunited with his parents. The village would like to sincerely thank Robert for his help in locating the child. Robert’s parents also attended tonight’s ceremony.

Sgt Kevin Fuhrken was also #2 at Black River PD for several years. He was a great cop and always willing and wanting to help. Everyone in this photo was a cops cop and their dedication to law enforcement was/is always appreciated.

From left to right: Duane Clark, Pete Barnett, Sheriff James Lafferty, Undersheriff Ed Simser, Kevin Fuhrken, Dave Lamoree. According to Pete, this photo was taken in 1994. Hard to believe this was 25 years ago! Of this bunch Pete was the last to retire, hanging up his stetson in 2013. Sadly Kevin Fuhrken and Dave Lamoree have passed away, but we do see the others when we're out and about, and they are always welcome to stop in and say hello. For those that are curious, JCSO road patrol & Corrections switched from grey to black uniforms in the early 2000's. Road patrol switched from the blue & gold Sheriff patch to black & gold in in 2007. Corrections Officers still use the blue & gold patch. (Thanks to retired JCSO Lt. Mike Peterson for sharing this photo.)

Thank you to all of our sponsors and those who took the time to make this a success. 57 children were paired with various first responder agencies from Jefferson County. Here are just a few of the great moments from today.

You can also go online to www.dmv.ny.gov and enter peeling plates in the search box. If your plates are peeling, there is no cost to replace unless you want to keep the same number/letter combination.

Are your plates peeling? It’s a problem that began a few years ago but we are still seeing some everyday and yes, you can get stopped and be ticketed for having unreadable plates.

DMV will replace your plates at no cost to you. Just take them to a local DMV Office and get a new set.
