• S131 — 4H Building at Central States Fairgrounds
• Extrication & Man vs. Machine — Barn 9, Central States Fairgrounds
• Handline Management & Truckless Truckie — City Training Grounds (2420 Creek Drive)

All classes begin at 8:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday (25th & 26th).

Make sure you plan ahead and arrive early so you’re ready to train. See you there!

Why this matters:

Due to dry conditions and increased fire risk, Meade County has enacted a county-wide burn ban to protect public safety.

What’s prohibited:

Campfires
Open burning
Any outdoor fire not contained in an enclosed structure

Penalties for violations:

Up to $500 fine and/or 30 days in jail

May also be responsible for fire suppression and cleanup costs

Meade County South Dakota

Meade County Residents,

As many of you are aware, there are significant uncontrolled fires burning near Custer tonight. Yesterday, our area also experienced a fire near Bear Butte, and earlier today the State revoked all open burn permits across the Black Hills due to the extreme fire danger.

After consulting with Sturgis Fire Chief Lensegrav, and other Fire Department Officials, Sheriff West is strongly urging all Meade County residents to refrain from any burning for the foreseeable future.

Current fuel conditions are extremely dry and volatile. Even though there is some moisture forecast in the coming hours, it will not significantly reduce the fire risk. Under these conditions, even a small, controlled burn can quickly escape and become a serious threat to lives, property, and our natural resources.

We all share the responsibility of protecting our communities. In light of the current fire danger, we are asking everyone to do their part and avoid burning of any kind. While a light snowfall or brief moisture may make conditions appear safe, warmer temperatures forecast for next week will quickly dry fuels again and return us to critical fire conditions.

This could be the beginning of a long and challenging fire season. Please help protect Meade County, your neighbors, and the first responders who stand ready to protect this community.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has revoked all active pile burn permits across the Black Hills effective today, ending the pile burn season early due to dry conditions, active wildfires, and elevated fire danger. If you have recently burned debris piles, check them immediately and make sure they are completely extinguished.
