Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad

Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad We provide emergency medical and technical rescue services to Blacksburg and Montgomery County. Faces and equipment have changed greatly over the last 60 years.

Welcome

BVRS is the sole provider of Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Care to the Town of Blacksburg and the northern portion of Montgomery County. Since our founding 60 years ago, BVRS has been providing quality care to our neighbors. Our providers are all volunteers with State Emergency Medical Services certifications and our services are always free. Each of our members considers it a privilege

to provide this vital service to our community.

2010 marked our 60th year of service to the community. However, our mission has remained the same - to provide quality medical care to our neighbors.

Thanks to everyone who came to our open house on Saturday! We had a blast doing technical rescue demonstrations, giving ambulance tours, and teaching about EMS. We hope to see you all next year!
Have a good memorial day and stay safe! 🇺🇸🚑

On EMS Recognition Day, we honor members of the EMS community who regularly go above and beyond what’s expected. It’s a day to give gratitude to first responders for their unwavering commitment to serving their communities.

Save-a-life day isn't about the EMS personnel; instead, it's about congratulating and celebrating the bystanders who jump into action while EMS is on its way. It's about the CPR-certified individuals who provide high-quality CPR and improve people’s chances of survival. It's about the individuals who are Stop-the-Bleed certified and are able to provide care prior to EMS arrival. It's even about those who put band-aids on scraped knees. Congrats everyone! Thanks for saving lives. We appreciate all of you.

Happy EMS for Children Day! Here at Blacksburg Rescue we love introducing kids to EMS through Touch-a-Truck events and our Open House. At these events, kids get to interact with our equipment and learn about how cool an ambulance is! Our members do extensive training with pediatric patients to be able to provide the absolute best standard of care for our littlest patients.
If your kiddo wants to come see an ambulance, plus other vehicles and equipment, swing by our Open House on Saturday, May 23rd.

In honor of EMS safety day, here's some tips and tricks to stay safe in traffic.

Slow down and pull over in a safe area when you see an emergency vehicle approaching, make sure to leave enough room for the vehicle to pass. Stay alert, there may be more than one vehicle approaching.

Follow directions given by Police, Firefighters or EMS when traffic is being directed around an accident, make sure to wait for your signal to go.

Members~ remember to wear your traffic vests while out on the road!

Today is EMS Remembrance Day, the last day of EMS week. Let’s take some time to remember Christiane Cost, she was a member of Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad (BVRS) for seven years, from December 3, 2013 until February 18, 2020. She was an Emergency Medical Technician and frequently ran the early morning shifts with Sharon Diller, Chantelle McGill, and Louisa Gay.

In December 2015, Chris ran for and was elected as the Clerk. She was elected again in 2016 as the Clerk, but her skills were needed as the Community Relations Manager, helping to organize the Grand Opening of the New Station, so she resigned as Clerk to focus on that position.

Chris resigned in February of 2020 and battled Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) for several years. Her Christian faith was a strong motivator in her service to our Squad and Community. She met the long and difficult decline in her health with dignity, grace, and humor, passing away at age 50. She is much beloved and will be missed by her duty group friends and the former Station Secretary Lorraine Plemmons.

This week's Throwback Thursday will take us all the way back to a time before electricity. Thursday morning, starting at 8:30am, our station will be without power while contractors connect power to our new outdoor vehicle charging stations. While our administrative phone lines will be down, this will not impact 9-1-1 calls or emergency response. Big thanks to Town of Blacksburg Government and our community for funding and supporting this project! This will allow us to keep our vehicles charged and ready to respond when parked outside, especially during the winter.
