Hahn Horticulture Garden

Hahn Horticulture Garden The Hahn Horticulture Garden is a beautiful six-acre teaching and display garden on the VT campus Hahn, for the generous gift and bequest for expansion from T.

The garden features hundreds of species of woody and herbaceous plants from around the world showcased in various features: a multi-acre shade garden, “hot” perennial border, spectrum mixed border, xeriphytic garden, two water features including the Jane Andrews Memorial Stream Garden, Pavilion tent lawn and folly, the Meadow Garden (new in 2008), and the Peggy Lee Hahn Garden Pavilion (special ev

ents facility and staff offices). The current garden, including new construction, covers six acres. Founded in 1984 by Horticulture faculty Robert Lyons, Richard Johnson and Robert McDuffie as the Horticulture Gardens, it was renamed the Hahn Horticulture Garden in November 2004 in honor of Peggy L. Marshall and Peggy Hahn. Many garden components and structures have been designed and built by Hort faculty and students. Many people over the years have contributed to the garden: students, faculty, staff, community volunteers, nursery and greenhouse growers, landscapers, and so many more.

Get outside... it's good for you.

“There’s research that suggests just spending time around trees and green spaces actually doesn’t just improve mood, but also can improve things like attention and help with cognition,” he said.

Seeing neighbors in their gardens, while you’re working on yours, also provides brain-boosting benefits.

“Gardening, which a lot of people start doing in spring, is both cognitively engaging, and oftentimes is a pretty good workout,” Katz said. “It’s the fresh air, the sunlight — all of these things that seem to have an affect on mood but also seem to improve things like attention.”

Spring is good for your brain, according to Benjamin Katz, associate professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech.
