The Technical Rescue Division of Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad specializes in skills to locate, access, stabilize and transport patients from a variety of incidents. We actively train and respond to high angle rope rescue, swiftwater rescue, search and rescue, dive recovery, cave rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse and vehicle extrication incidents. In addition to our local and regional
responses we have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to provide statewide response for wilderness search and rescue, cave rescue, incident management and rope rescue. We provide medical standbys for events in terrain conditions that require specialized training (i.e. mountain bike and cross-country horse races) and serve in conjunction with other emergency service organizations in response to natural and man-made disaster conditions. Services include all-weather search and rescue of missing persons and downed aircraft, complete search and rescue management, technical and semi-technical evacuations, and safety and survival education utilizing the latest advanced technical equipment. BVRS technical rescue also conducts educational and training programs in subjects related to search and rescue, wilderness safety, and survival for the communities we serve. Examples include first aid and CPR classes, preventative search and rescue classes we teach in local schools and scout organizations, and wilderness education for a variety of local organizations.
