Joining the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets A senior military college/lifestyle within Virginia Tech. Offering two tracks. All ROTC cadets are required to be enrolled in the Corps of Cadets.

A place where interested students and parents can ask questions and find out more about the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. One of the nation's six premier senior military colleges, we offer two equal tracks: Military (for cadets enrolled in one of our three top-performing ROTC programs Army, Air Force, or Naval -including the Marine Option), or Citizen-Leader (for cadets who want the additional preparation for securing a career after graduation). Currently, 1,245 cadets are enrolled, with approximately 475 new cadets enrolling each year, fairly equally divided amongst each of the ROTCs and the Citizen Leader Track. The Corps lives together on Upper Quad in brand new, air conditioned residence halls all four years. Fifth year students graduate from the Corps and are allowed to live off-campus. The Corps has quiet hours for four hours each evening, Sunday through Thursday. And, cadets take a leadership lab each semester, which can lead to an academic minor in Leadership Studies. At the heart of our leader development program, is the Honor Code: A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do. the non-toleration clause is above and beyond what other students at Virginia Tech are expected to live up to. Giles County officials are naming a boat landing “Cadet Landing” in honor of the 500+ cadets that helped cleanup efforts along the New River following the devastation from Hurricane Helene. That fall, cadets made the choice to cancel Caldwell March, a rite of passage for first-year students, to instead aid their neighboring county in the days following the storm. Later in the spring, the cadet regiment sent another 500+ cadets to continue cleanup efforts. Cadets also participate heavily in the annual ReNew the New event, helping to keep the historic waterway clean and continuing a strong relationship with Giles County, honoring the Corps’ and Virginia Tech’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Position Responsibilities: As regimental adjutant, Cadet Major Godsey manages the regiment’s personnel and administrative operations, ensuring effective communication and accountability. He oversees personnel rosters, announcements, room reservations, and publishes the regimental orders for every workday.

Why Virginia Tech: With four other Hokies in my family, I grew up visiting Virginia Tech and fell in love with our campus and community. I had the privilege of watching my sister, Capt. Caitlyn Godsey (USAF), experience the Corps of Cadets and see firsthand how the program shaped her into a better person and leader. Adding on that it’s the best engineering school in the state, Virginia Tech offered everything I could’ve wanted.

Meet the newest member of the Corps 🐾

Introducing Growley IV, call sign Bedford. Named in honor of the Bedford Boys, Bedford’s name carries forward a legacy of courage, service, and unwavering loyalty. 

Bedford will spend the next year completing his initial training and will join cadets on Upper Quad next fall. He will officially report for duty in the fall of 2028 after a year of shadowing Growley III, call sign Stryker.

Once Bedford assumes Growley duties in Fall 2028, Stryker will begin his well-deserved retirement and will be cared for by a former cadet handler.

Legend says the original Growley was a beloved Depression-era dog cared for by cadets sharing breakfast scraps. He returned to Virginia Tech in 2016 when Echo Company introduced a new furry friend to boost Corps morale and serve as an ambassador for the Corps.

Let’s give a shout out to our Hokie Heroes, U.S Army 2nd Lt. Drew Conboy ’24 and U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Dylan Snider ’24, and our flag cadet, Noah Calayo, as the Hokies travel to take on Boston College!

Conboy (Bravo Company) is serving as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear officer and is responsible for the support and planning of combat aviation operations across four European countries. He completed his degree in construction engineering and management from the College of Engineering in May 2025. 

Snider (November Company) is serving as a staff weather officer responsible for leading a team of forecasters providing weather intelligence in support of combat aviation operations. He completed his degree in meteorology from the College of Natural Resources and Environment in 2025. 

Calayo is a member of Charlie Company and the corps’ Citizen-Leader Track. He serves as the platoon leader for the first-year cadets in his company, offering guidance and setting the example in leadership and personal appearance. From Virginia Beach, Virginia, Calayo also serves as the public affairs officer for his company, showing his passion for creating compelling content that accurately portrays the cadet experience. He is majoring in criminology in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and showing exceptional balance between his cadet and academic responsibilities, he also works for Virginia Tech Dining Services at Bruegger’s Bagels and competes with the Virginia Tech Club Wrestling team.

Continuing with the fall 2026 regimental staff introduction is the regimental command sergeant major, C/CSM Potts.

Home Company: Bravo
Desired Career Track: JAG
Major: Criminology

Position Responsibilities: As the regimental command sergeant major, C/CSM Potts enforces standards across the regiment and ensures the regimental commander’s intent is carried out. Working closely with C/1SGs and C/SGMs, he helps maintain accountability, discipline, and effective operations throughout the Corps.

Yesterday at Corps Lab, we had the opportunity to host the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David Wolfe, and his wife, Dr. Doniel Wolfe. CMSAF Wolfe discussed the Air Force’s three priorities: “Readiness, Modernization, and Taking Care of Airmen and Family,” reflecting the priorities of General Wilsbach.

CMSAF Wolfe spoke about maintaining physical fitness standards to ensure readiness, utilizing AI and modernization efforts, and the importance of checking in on one another and taking care of those around us.

Dr. Wolfe also highlighted the important role spouses and families play in supporting Airmen, emphasizing that taking care of our people extends beyond the service member to the families who stand behind them.

Thank you to CMSAF and Dr. Wolfe for taking the time to speak with the Corps and share their experiences and perspectives.

Shout out to our Hokie Hero, U.S. Navy Capt. Daniel Bense ’99, and our flag cadets Alex Scott and Aaryn James as the Hokies take on Maryland this weekend!

A career naval flight officer, Bense is currently serving in U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility as the U.S. Fifth Fleet maritime operations center director in support of Operation Epic Fury where he is responsible for the daily ex*****on of U.S. naval forces in support of ongoing operations. During his time in the Corps, Bense was the India Company commander.

Scott and James were selected by their company leadership for their outstanding peer mentorship, physical excellence, and positive influence throughout the Corps. 

Scott demonstrates exceptional leadership across all cadet classes. He actively builds connections within his company and battalion to ensure fellow cadets feel supported and leads a Bible study providing mentorship on faith and leadership. A resident of Barrington, Illinois, Scott is a member of November Company and Army ROTC majoring in building construction in the College of Engineering. 

James serves as a knowledgeable trainer and key resource for first-year cadets in Oscar Company. Recognized for his initiative and reliability, he consistently assists with company operations and mentors fellow upperclass cadets. James, a native of Crofton, Maryland, is a member of Army ROTC majoring in criminology in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
