Yesterday just before 4pm, Blackstone VFD along with Crewe and Burkeville VFD were dispatched to 206 N Main St for the report of a structure fire, at Family Dollar. Units arrived on scene within 7 minutes and encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from the building. Members began deploying handlines and a blitz fire appliance that allows us to flow 500 gallons per minute and began extinguishing the fire. Tower 6 positioned in the parking lot of the store and we were able to deliver 1,000 gallons a minute into the building to assist with knocking down the bulk of the fire. Due to the outside temperature and the severity of the incident, additional departments were added to the call to assist us with fire attack and overhaul. Additionally, the call was made for more ambulances to come to the scene to support the incident due to the high outside temperatures.
Members were able to get the fire under control in a little over an hour. During the incident, 1 member was transported to the ER for a heat related injury and 1 other was driven to a local ER for a fall injury. All members have been cleared and released without needing any further treatment!
During the incident we experienced an issue that we are asking for your help to prevent in the future. As we arrived on scene, we had some of our fire hose driven over, which then caused the hose to burst. This took away our water supply momentarily until we were able to lay another section of hose in its place. Please understand that not only does this affect our ability to have water supply to help us extinguish the fire, but it is also against the law. Please be mindful of this and do not drive over the fire hose!
