Blakesburg Public Library

Blakesburg Public Library Blakesburg Public Library is THE place to go for books, movies, audio and e-books, education & research databases, computers, wi-fi, and other services.

The Blakesburg town council voted to sponsor a Library at its regular meeting on November 2, 1936. The library was to be in the basement of the bank building owned by John Huber, with the city furnishing the heat and the lights, along with the rent of $5.00 a month. The first librarian was Zelma Glosser. In May, 1943, the library moved to its second location -- the Fritz Building, which provided a

little more space. On March 2, 1981, the library moved into a room in the east end of the new Community Building. That remained the library's home until June of 2006, when it moved into the west end of the community building, taking over the space vacated by the Fire & Rescue Department. The Library moved into it's latest home (the former Elementary School Building at 407 S. Wilson St.) on June 21, 2014. Plans are in the works to raise funds for a new library to be built in Blakesburg in the next 12-18 months. The new facility should be home to the library for many years to come.

Just getting some early information out for the library's annual Father-Daughter Dance. More information will be coming, and will be sent home from school with students in EBF District Elementary Schools. Since we're in the 2020s, we're going back to celebrate like the 1920s. Should be a Roaring Good Time !!

During the month of February come to the Blakesburg Public Library to have a Blind Date with a Book. Choose from a small selection of books (we have some for adults as well as some for teens) to see if it is a love match for you. Check out and take the book home based on its description. Read it, and fill out the Rate Your Date form included with the book. Bring the completed form back to the library to be entered into a drawing for a prize. Come show your library some love, and check out a genre or author that may be new to you.

We have some great new children's picture books at the Blakesburg Public Library to help your little ones celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Stop in to check out a book or two, and see what kind of shenanigans some characters may be getting up to. These stories are filled with lucky charms, leprechaun, rainbows and pots of gold.

"We'll Get By With a Little Help from our Friends." The Friends of the Blakesburg Public Library is kicking off a fund-raising effort with the new year. In the first three months the organization would like to raise nearly $1400. You can help make that happen by choosing a date on the calendar, and then donating the corresponding amount in dollars to the 501c3 nonprofit organization. Dates for the first three months of the year that have been selected have an X beside them (to the right of the date). All other dates are open at this point. This fund-raiser is a great way to allow folks with any budget to donate and be a part of the library renovation project. We hope to fill in every date to raise the maximum amount for each month. See instructions below on how you can donate to help out. Exterior building renovation work will be completed very soon, and as soon as the funds are available, interior work on the west end of the facility will begin. The goal is to complete the interior asap and get all of the library's furnishings, remaining collection, etc., out of storage, and utilize the entire building for library programs and services. Wishing all of our patrons and community members, a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy New Year !!
