Bloomer EMS recently participated in a mock prom crash at Bloomer High School, working alongside many different emergency service agencies and community partners as part of this yearly training and educational event.

This exercise not only provides valuable training for our local EMS, fire, and law enforcement agencies, but also serves as an important educational opportunity for students in our community about safe driving and the dangers of distracted driving.

Each year we take part in this event, and from the students to the teachers to those of us involved in the response, it serves as a solemn and all-too-realistic reminder of how quickly lives can change. The silence of the crowd each time gives us goose bumps. Thank you to everyone who helps plan this each year - the importance of this exercise does not go unnoticed.

At tonight's ambulance meeting, AEMT Cole Boettcher was presented with a life saving award.

Recently, while off duty, Cole responded to a cardiac arrest emergency in a rural part of our service area. He arrived within minutes of the 911 call and performed life-saving measures which resulted in the patient waking up and breathing. Cole and others on the scene directly contributed to the patient's survival.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates are extremely low. The times that they are successful are always because of early CPR and AED use, both of which happened that day. Congratulations Cole!

ICE STORM APPROACHING BARRON COUNTY

The National Weather Service is advising that another round of freezing rain and icy conditions are expected this evening through early Tuesday morning. Barron County is predicted to receive a minimum of 0.01" of ice with the potential of receiving 0.10" (ten times the original amount) or more as the storm progresses.

The commute for tomorrow morning will be significantly impacted so please leave early to give yourself enough time so you don't have to rush.

Here are our top 5 tips for driving on ice:

1) Drive like your grandma is holding a full cup of hot coffee.
No sudden moves, no hard braking, no showing off, slow and smooth keeps everyone (including grandma) safe and happy.

2) Black ice is just regular ice wearing camouflage. If the road looks "wet" when it's 10 degrees out, congratulations - you've found it. Now slow down before it finds you.

3) Ice doesn't care how expensive your truck is.
4WD, AWD, big tires, ice doesn't care. These things will put you into a snowbank without hesitation. Your most important factor is speed. S L O W D O W N . . .

4) Assume that every other driver is late for work, under-caffeinated, and over-confident. Give them space. Lots of it.

5) If you feel confident, slow down
Confidence on ice is usually the last warning before regret. If it feels easy, you're going too fast.

Stay Safe,

Mike Judy, Director
Office of Emergency Management
Barron County Sheriff's Department
