In Remembrance of Sergeant Steven Splan
End of Watch: August 2, 2020 🖤💙

Today, the Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Department pauses to honor and remember Sergeant Steven Splan on the anniversary of his End of Watch.

Sgt. Splan served our community with unwavering dedication for 15 years as both a police officer and fire investigator, following more than two decades of service as a firefighter. Beyond his distinguished career, Steve was known for his warmth, leadership, and deep devotion to his family.

Six years ago today, Sgt. Splan made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our community. We remain forever grateful for his service, his sacrifice, and the lasting legacy he leaves within our department and throughout the community.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family, colleagues, friends and all who knew and loved him.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our officer, Sergeant Steve Splan. Sgt. Splan passed away after suffering a medical emergency in our station while on-duty. Sgt. Splan was known for his quick wit, infectious smile and genuine concern for others. Sgt. Splan has been with the Department for 15 years and served in a variety of roles during his tenure. Most of all, Sgt. Splan had an unbridled passion to serve his community. He leaves behind a wife and four daughters. We ask for your thoughts and prayers for his family, friends and colleagues during this very difficult time.

Today, we honored the service and legacy of Captain Thomas Van Simaeys, who retired after 26½ years of dedicated service to the City of Bloomfield Hills. Surrounded by family and colleagues, we celebrated a career defined by leadership, professionalism, and commitment to public service.

Captain Van Simaeys’ impact extended far beyond his job, touching friends, coworkers, and family alike—an influence most recently reflected in one of his daughters, who was inspired to enter the public safety profession as an emergency services dispatcher with the Bloomfield Township Police Department. She had the special honor of participating in his final radio call, making the moment especially meaningful and memorable.

Thank you, Captain Van Simaeys, for your service and lasting legacy. We have the watch from here. Semper Fi and enjoy your retirement.
