LAHSER CLASS OF 1980 GIVES BACK TO BHS BY DONATING $5000 TO THE BHSF, AS PART OF THEIR REUNION FESTIVITIES:
On October 4, more than 100 alumni from the Lahser High School Class of 1980 gathered at Pine Lake Country Club for their 45-year high school reunion. The day’s events included an optional tour of North Hills Middle School, the building once known as Lahser High School.
Lahser High School closed in 2013 with the opening of the new Bloomfield Hills High School, which unified Lahser and Andover High Schools into a single campus serving grades 9-12. After several years of limited use by extracurricular programs and sports teams, the former Lahser building underwent extensive renovations funded by the 2020 Bond and reopened as North Hills Middle School, serving grades 6-8 starting fall 2023.
For the alumni who attended, the tour of North Hills offered a glimpse of the transformed facility. While the newly constructed grade-level hallways were largely unrecognizable, some spaces - the pool, the gymnasium, and in particular the auditorium - remained familiar and sparked fond memories among the visitors. One alumnus reminisced about the camaraderie among students, the dedicated teachers, and the opportunities to succeed at whatever kids wanted to do in life. With regard to the teachers in particular, his fond memories were clear when he said, “It felt like you were going to school with friends.”
In a gesture of gratitude, the Lahser Class of 1980 will be donating $5,000 to the Bloomfield Hills Schools Foundation in honor of the many educators who helped enable their success beyond high school. Reunion organizers also recognized particular former Lahser Staff Members who went above and beyond, including:
Nick Conti (in attendance at the reunion)
Dave Welcome (in attendance at the reunion)
Dennis Hurley (in attendance at the reunion)
Pete Bowers
Russ Kopitz
Tom McGlone
Ted Guthard
Lou Ruggiello
Joe Michaels
Dave Campanella
