Public Gas Leak Training Session - Monday, May 18
Dear Residents of Bloomfield,
Monday, March 9, 2026, began like any other, quiet streets, familiar routines, the comforting rhythm of a town that knows itself well. But in a moment, that sense of normalcy was shattered. A gas explosion took more than just the calm of the day, it took a life. And with it, it left a silence that has settled deeply into our community.
We mourn the loss of a neighbor, a friend, a fellow citizen whose presence mattered. No words can fully capture the weight of that absence, nor the grief carried by those who knew and loved him. Our thoughts remain with his family, whose lives have been forever changed.
Tragedies like this force us to confront difficult truths. Natural gas, while essential to many of our daily comforts, carries risks that are often invisible, odorless, silent, and, when undetected, devastating. In the aftermath, questions arise: Could this have been prevented? What can we do differently? How do we ensure this never happens again?
In response, The Blue Hills Fire Department and Center Fire Department have come together with renewed purpose. We are working closely with CNG to take meaningful steps forward. This partnership is focused on education, awareness, and preparedness, ensuring that every resident knows how to recognize the signs of a gas leak and what actions to take.
The Blue Hills Fire Department and Center Fire Department in partnership with CNG have organized a community outreach initiative to provide clear, practical guidance. Residents will learn how to recognize warning signs such as the smell of sulfur, hissing sounds near gas lines, or unexplained dead vegetation. More importantly, they will understand how to respond quickly and safely, because in these situations, knowledge can save lives.
As part of this effort, we will also be distributing free gas detectors to residents of our town. Supplies are limited, and devices will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. One per household. This initiative is intended to help households add an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. Please note that identification is required.
This initiative is not just about information, it is about responsibility. It reflects our shared commitment to protecting one another and honoring the life we lost by striving to prevent future tragedies.
We cannot undo what has happened. But we can choose how we move forward. As a community, we do so with compassion, with vigilance, and with a promise to look-out for one another, to stay informed, and to ensure that from this loss comes a stronger, safer town.
The Gas Leak Training is Scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2026, at 7:00 pm - Blue Hills Fire Department Headquarters, 1021 Blue Hills Avenue, Bloomfield, CT. We hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
Commissioners, Blue Hills Fire Department
Commissioners, Center Fire Department
