An Article from the Bloomfield Messenger written by Rabbi Small
Mayor Suzette DeBeatham-Brown brings people of all faiths, color, and creeds together. In challenging times during this pandemic, she has stood tall and strong. She boldly stands up against what is socially unjust while standing up for what is socially just. A peacebuilder, she is a peacemaker seeking to understand all
viewpoints while respecting and honoring difference.
I remember all too well the horrific attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue. After the attack, her voice was the first one I heard on the phone, inviting me to stand with her and numerous clergy of all faiths, in solidarity on the steps of Bloomfield Town Hall. Her call and personal invitation to have me come and stand together as one people at a time when my community and I were angry, yet very vulnerable,
meant everything to me.
Mayor Brown has what we say Neshama – Soul. Humble with resolve. Compassionate with care, rationale, and reason.
Drawing people together to fight racism while coalition building towards healing is necessary in a leadership like Mayor Brown.
In January, Mayor Brown joined me in a heartfelt dialogue before the Emanuel Congregation to discuss peacebuilding and countering bias in our communities.
Her grace, warmth and wise leadership helped me feel like a true member of the Bloomfield community.
Recently, West Hartford Mayor Susan Cantor, and Daniella Riesman joined me on stage to be part of the Second Annual outdoor Interfaith Concert, another unifying initiative supported by our mayor.
I respect her and appreciate the warm, courageous, and resourceful ways in which she created opportunities for people to come together in neighborly love, acceptance, and friendship!
