Week 4 of Junior Deputy Camp (the final week) was full of excitement! The Jr. Deputies began with a trip to Bernie PD where they were shown the courtroom, jail cells, dispatch, and vehicles. They each had a turn with lights/sirens in the vehicle. They then traveled to Dexter PD where they toured the facility with Chief Hank Trout. Sgt. Derrick Durall gave a fantastic presentation with K9 Knox. The Jr. Deputies were able to see K9 Knox perform obedience commands, article searches and narcotic searches. The Sheriff's Department treated them to a bar-b-que with special "Carol Cookies" from Mrs. Carol Moreland. We wrapped up the camp with a graduation ceremony for the Junior Deputies. They received plaques commemorating their hard work and participation. At the end of graduation, the Jr. Deputies had a surprise for Deputy O'Dell and Sheriff Hefner!
The Stoddard County Sheriff's Office is grateful for the opportunity to provide this experience for the youth of our county. As this was the inaugural year, we plan on it growing each and every year.

Week 3 of Junior Deputy Camp began with a tour of Puxico Police Department. Officer Brandon Throop explained the job duties of a city officer to the campers, and provided them with souvenirs to take home. Upon returning to Stoddard County Sheriff's Office, the campers learned the basics of Accident Investigation from Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Greg Ulm and Master Sargeant Jim Cooksey. The big event during week 3 was a continuation of week 2's crime scene investigation. A mock trial was held, where the campers served as jury members and watched how court proceedings could possibly go in such a case.

Week 2 of Junior Deputy Camp began as the Junior Deputies visited Bloomfield DPS. The job duties of the DPS were explained to them, they toured the office and were able to see one of the patrol vehicles. They then moved to the mock crime scene, where they were taught about crime scene investigation, and evidence collections. They worked the crime scene much as a police officer would in a real incident. They established two suspects in the crime, which proved helpful as they closed the night by learning about interview and interrogation techniques. They were able to witness Chief Deputy Andy Holden in action as he interrogated the two suspects.

Junior Deputy camp is in full swing!! During week 1 campers enjoyed a visit to Stoddard County 911 Service and Stoddard County Ambulance District. They learned about 911 mapping and toured the communications center. As a special activity, they made their very own road signs after learning about county road signage. Upon arrival back at the Sheriff's Office, they toured our communications center and learned some similarities/differences in the two communications departments. Their next activity was learning about the equipment and vehicles the deputies have. They were able to see everything firsthand, and even sit inside a patrol vehicle if they wanted. The evening ended with a lesson about fingerprints. They were all fingerprinted on cards to take home as a souvenir. Sheriff Carl Hefner and the Stoddard County Sheriff's Office are happy to have this wonderful group of kiddos join us to learn more about our place in the community.

As we celebrate National Telecommunications week April 11th thru 17th we want to take this time to honor our amazing communicators. They are the unsung heroes of public safety, the very first responder on scene during a tragic event. They are connected with terrified victims, angry informants, suicidal subject and grouchy officers. They are the calming influence of all of them - the quiet, competent voice that calms the situation and gives us all sanity and safety.

Thank you all for the job you do, for the many days, nights, weekends, and holidays that you miss with your family to protect our county. YOU ARE A TRUE HERO

JUNIOR DEPUTY CAMP

Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner is proud to announce the Stoddard County Sheriff's Office will be holding a Junior Deputy Camp this summer.

The camp will consist of weekly meetings on Thursday evenings during the month of June. Camp will meet at 5pm and dismiss at 9pm. Participants can look forward to an introduction into the duties involved in many facets of law enforcement. They will learn everything from dispatching to processing a crime scene to the flow of the judicial process in court. Some of the activities planned include fingerprinting and accident scene investigation. Tours of each police department in the county will be included, so that attendees can learn about each department.

For this inaugural year of the camp, two students ages 12-14 will be chosen from each school district within the county. Candidates must fill out an application packet which they may obtain from their school office. The application will include a reference from a Principal, Counselor, Teacher/Staff member of their school, or a law enforcement official. Each application will be reviewed and two students from each school will be chosen to attend. Deadline for applications will be Friday, May 7th. Attendees will be required to wear masks and gloves as necessary during camp activities.

We are excited to share our love for our career and county with those who are interested in pursuing their own career in law enforcement.
