🔥 TODAY’S THE DAY. 🔥

After months of building, researching, refining, and pulling lessons directly from real-world fire investigations, From Compliance to Cause — Applying Fire Codes in Commercial Fire Investigations hits the classroom today at the 2026 New Mexico Fire Marshals Association Conference.

This isn’t a class about simply finding code violations.

It’s about connecting the dots.

🔥 What existed before the fire?
🔎 What survived after the fire?
📖 What do the codes tell us should have existed?
📸 What can inspections, photographs, records, and physical evidence prove?
⚖️ And most importantly—does the violation actually matter to the origin, growth, spread, suppression, or investigation of THIS fire?

We’ll work through real incidents, actual fire scenes, commercial cooking systems, NFPA 96, fire behavior, investigative photography, drone footage, physical evidence, and the decisions that take us from an initial observation to a defensible conclusion.

Because a code violation isn’t automatically a fire cause.

You have to prove the connection.

Today we’re going FROM COMPLIANCE TO CAUSE.

What happens BEFORE the fire affects what we find AFTER the fire.

🔥 Prevention Through Investigation.

🔥 THE 2026 NEW MEXICO FIRE MARSHALS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE IS HERE! 🔥

The 2026 New Mexico Fire Marshals Association Conference kicks off today, bringing together fire marshals, inspectors, investigators, prevention professionals, and fire service leaders from across New Mexico for a week of training, networking, and professional development.

One of the things I’m especially proud to highlight this year is the continued partnership between the New Mexico Fire Marshals Association and the New Mexico Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (NMIAAI).

Fire prevention and fire investigation should never operate in separate lanes. What happens before the fire directly affects what we find after the fire.

That connection will be at the center of my class:

🔥 FROM COMPLIANCE TO CAUSE
Applying Fire Codes in Commercial Fire Investigations

We’ll look beyond simply identifying a code violation and examine how investigators can connect:

CODE REQUIREMENTS → ACTUAL CONDITIONS → FIRE BEHAVIOR → PHYSICAL EVIDENCE → ORIGIN & CAUSE

Using commercial fire scenarios and real-world case studies, we’ll explore how inspection history, fire protection systems, commercial cooking operations, NFPA 96, maintenance practices, and pre-fire conditions can become critical pieces of the investigation.

This partnership between NMIAAI and the New Mexico Fire Marshals Association represents exactly where our profession needs to continue heading—bringing prevention, inspection, and investigation together to better understand why fires happen and use those lessons to prevent the next one.

Prevention through investigation — if we understand why fires happen, we can prevent them.

Looking forward to a great week of training at the 2026 New Mexico Fire Marshals Association Conference!

🔥 NMIAAI & Colorado IAAI — Building Partnerships Through Training 🔥

The New Mexico Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (NMIAAI) is pleased to partner with the Colorado Chapter of IAAI in supporting upcoming training opportunities for fire investigators across our region.

This week, NMIAAI sent several New Mexico fire investigators to Durango, Colorado, to attend Dr. Elayne Pope’s presentation on fire fatality scenes.

Training opportunities like this give investigators the chance to expand their knowledge, learn from nationally recognized experts, and strengthen professional relationships across state lines.

We appreciate the Colorado Chapter of IAAI for welcoming our New Mexico investigators and look forward to continuing this partnership through future training events.
