At 6:19PM tonight, New York State Police sent out a BOLO for a special needs missing juvenile that was last seen in the Town of Hamptonburgh. Blooming Grove Police Department Patrol Officers were in the area of the Town that borders Hamptonburgh and immediately began canvassing. Shortly thereafter, Officers observed a group of Juveniles playing near Railroad Tracks. The juveniles were questioned and gave a fantastic description of a boy that had been seen walking towards Town of Chester which was an identical match provided by the BOLO.

Blooming Grove Police Officers began canvassing the Railroad on foot from various roadway intersections. After canvassing about 1 mile, the Missing was observed emerging from a wooded area covered in mud and bleeding from the legs after having walked through thick brush.

The BGPD Officer who observed him was able to stop him and engage in a routine conversation eventually having him admit to having run away. The Missing sat near the Officer and gave a tearful admission of the events that had caused him to want to run away. NYSP was notified that the Missing was located and BGPD escorted the Missing back home to the heartbroken Parents.

We want to thank all of the surrounding jurisdictions that were also out canvassing for the Missing and are glad to have been able to reunite the family.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY:

Due to religious celebrations being held in our neighboring community THIS EVENING BEGINNING AROUND 7:00PM, expect larger than normal amounts of vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the Route 208 corridor in South Blooming Grove. This week Officers will be participating in New York State's "Put the Phone Away or Pay" initiative to address cell phone usage while driving. This week is part of the broader month long campaign for National Distracted Driving Awareness.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that over 3,200 people died as a result of distraction related crashes in 2024.

This is especially important for our younger drivers. Later this month will be the "No Empty Chair Campaign" which raises awareness of highway dangers in the hope there will be no empty chairs during prom and graduation season.

Please drive safe, that text isn't as important as your life or others.

We would like to take a moment to welcome and recognize the two newest members of the Department.

Officer Frank Smith joined the Department back in November from the Town of Wallkill Police Department. Previously he served with the New York City Police Department, and brought with him nearly ten years of experience as a Police Officer. He has already begun to make his mark on the Department, and we look forward to his good work in the future.

Officer Daniel Heffner was sworn in this afternoon at the Town Hall, and joins us from the City of Kingston Police Department where he served for nearly three years.

Welcome Officers Smith and Heffner; we are glad to have you added to our ranks, and are excited to see what comes next.

Orange County, NY has now been upgraded (or downgraded depending on point of view) from a Winter Storm Warning to a Blizzard Warning from Sunday 2/22/26 1PM until Monday 2/23/26 6PM.

This event is forecasted to bring high winds and heavy snow. We urge residents to stay off the roadways to allow Plows and Emergency Responders the ability to due their jobs as safely as possible. A state of emergency has been declared and failure to comply is a crime in New York State.

Use caution when removing heavy snow by taking frequent breaks to prevent over exertion. Dense snow in the forecasted amounts can raise blood pressure and heart rate leading to cardiac emergencies.

Please remove all vehicles from public roadways for easier snow removal.

As always, Town of Blooming Grove Police Department Personnel will be available 24/7 to respond to any calls for service and assist in any way possible.
