From our Department to the Town of Newburgh Police Department, we offer our deepest condolences on the loss of Detective Thompson.

It is with extremely heavy hearts that the Town of Newburgh Police Department announces the passing of Detective Christopher Thompson.

Detective Thompson began his career with the Town of Newburgh Police Department in April of 2017, after previously serving with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Wallkill Police Department.

Throughout his career, Detective Thompson served the Town of Newburgh Police Department in numerous roles and was a valued member of several specialized units. He served in the Patrol Division, as a K-9 Handler with the K-9 Unit, an active Fi****ms Instructor with the Fi****ms Unit, a General Topics Instructor, and a Team Leader on the Department’s Tactical Unit. Most recently, Detective Thompson served as an Investigator in the Detective Bureau.

Detective Thompson’s dedication to his profession, his fellow officers, and the community he served will not be forgotten. His loss is deeply felt throughout our Department and the entire law enforcement community.

We ask that everyone keep Detective Thompson’s family, friends, and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.

The Town of Newburgh Police Department would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone within the law enforcement community, our local community, and beyond who has reached out and offered their thoughts, prayers, condolences, and support during this difficult time. The outpouring of support for Detective Thompson, his family, and our Department has been truly appreciated.

On 7/19/26 at 2:25PM our agency responded to a call for a house struck by a bullet. Our Officers discovered that a rifle round had penetrated the rear glass door of the residence located in the Moffat Road/ Bull Road area. A search of the area was conducted however no shooters were located and no more shots had been heard. Neighbors in the area reported hearing 3-4 shots coming from the direction of the rail bed/New Windsor at an unknown distance. The investigation is ongoing and if anyone in the area has any information please let us know. Gun owners need to be aware of what is beyond the target they are shooting at. In this case it appears likely that this bullet travelled a long distance before impact.

Blooming Grove Police Officers responded to a structure fire just after 4AM this morning. Salisbury Mills Fire Company arrived and worked tirelessly for several hours while many other Fire Companies provided Mutual Aid. Blooming Grove Volunteer Ambulance was on scene assessing the family members and exhausted firemen and women. Chaveirim of Orange County was on scene providing hydration and support for all of the courageous volunteers. Thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries to any of the residents or volunteers. Unfortunately, 1 family pet was lost to the fire however.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, we want to remind members of the community of some common fire causes to be wary of: Space heaters left on for extended periods of time are a danger, charging, especially over charging of lithium batteries, live Christmas trees are highly combustible, chimney cleaning should be done regularly, paper towels and hand towels should not be left near any hot cooking surfaces, candles should not be left unattended (even outdoors), ci**rs, ash trays, birthday candles etc. should be not be discarded into a garbage can until they have been definitively extinguished, and any electrical work should be done by a licensed contractor. It is also helpful to keep garbage cans and other flammable materials away from the house and not in a garage or against the home's siding. Smoke detectors should be checked regularly, having easily accessible fire extinguishers and a family plan reviewed on how to properly exit the house based on where the fire location is, can all save lives.

Several times over the past few years local residents have been displaced by significant fires and we are grateful to live in a community that continues to all come together to support those in need. Again, special thank you to all of the heroic volunteers who respond to these dangerous calls at all hours of the day.

ROAD CLOSURE ALERT!

Mountain Lodge Road between Route 208 and Perry Creek Road is temporarily closed due to a motor vehicle accident that occurred yesterday afternoon.

Barricades, signs and cones have been placed in the area. Do not attempt to drive through as there are downed wires and debris in the area.

The Blooming Grove Police Department participates in various State and Federal Grants in order to be well equipped to best serve the community with fiscal responsibility to the local tax payers. New York State's Governor's Traffic Safety Committee's grants require participation in specific Traffic Enforcement Campaigns. Most recently we participated in Buckle Up New York where Officers conducted vehicle checkpoints, throughout the entirety of the Town, primarily focusing on addressing violations of the seatbelt laws.

From June 8th - June 14th and August 3rd - August 9th, Blooming Grove Police Department Officers will be participating in Speed Awareness Week. Below are some statistics which illustrate the dangers of speeding:

• In 2024, 31% of all fatal crashes in New York were caused by speeding
• 344 people lost their lives and 2,678 suffered serious injuries in these preventable collisions
• The number of fatal crashes caused by unsafe speed increases during the summer months
• 32% of the speed-related fatal and personal injury crashes occurred between noon and 6 p.m.

We remind all residents to be aware of the posted speed limit signs, to obey them and to use extra caution when approaching intersections.

Parents, as the school year ends and your children have more free time, please make sure to remind your teens and young adults to drive carefully. We ask that you, the Parents, make sure to hold them accountable for their poor driving habits so we don't have to.

At 6:19PM tonight, New York State Police sent out a BOLO for a special needs missing juvenile that was last seen in the Town of Hamptonburgh. Blooming Grove Police Department Patrol Officers were in the area of the Town that borders Hamptonburgh and immediately began canvassing. Shortly thereafter, Officers observed a group of Juveniles playing near Railroad Tracks. The juveniles were questioned and gave a fantastic description of a boy that had been seen walking towards Town of Chester which was an identical match provided by the BOLO.

Blooming Grove Police Officers began canvassing the Railroad on foot from various roadway intersections. After canvassing about 1 mile, the Missing was observed emerging from a wooded area covered in mud and bleeding from the legs after having walked through thick brush.

The BGPD Officer who observed him was able to stop him and engage in a routine conversation eventually having him admit to having run away. The Missing sat near the Officer and gave a tearful admission of the events that had caused him to want to run away. NYSP was notified that the Missing was located and BGPD escorted the Missing back home to the heartbroken Parents.

We want to thank all of the surrounding jurisdictions that were also out canvassing for the Missing and are glad to have been able to reunite the family.
