On this day, May 27, 1937, we lost Trooper Paul V. Minneman when he was shot and killed while searching for members of the Brady Gang, who had previously shot and killed two other police officers. Trooper Minneman and a Cass County Deputy were parked on the side of the road when a passing vehicle fired shots at them. The two officers gave chase, but lost sight of the vehicle. Trooper Minneman and the deputy stopped in the parking lot of a church west of Royal Center when they were ambushed as they were out of their patrol vehicles. Trooper Minneman was shot more than 20 times and succumbed to his wounds two days later. He had served with the Indiana State Police for more than 1 1/2 years and was assigned to the Lafayette Post.

HOOSIERS - as we approach the Memorial Day Weekend, the Indiana State Police Bloomington District reminds everyone to make safety a priority. Remember to , , and .

As families and friends gather to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, the Indiana State Police reminds everyone to make safety a priority this Memorial Day Weekend.

• 1,817 total crashes
• 7 fatal crashes
• 418 people injured
• 87 crashes involving alcohol
• 8 crashes involving drugs

Every crash statistic represents a life, a family, and a community impacted. If you plan to celebrate this weekend, make responsible choices before you get behind the wheel.

✅ Designate a sober driver
✅ Use a rideshare or taxi
