I want to share my personal position about what is happening in our city and in MN right now. This is not a statement from the Council itself, nor any official city statement, but a reflection of where I am personally on the issue. I am writing this as I fly back to Minnesota from a work trip to Atlanta, where I got a lot of questions from my colleagues about what the federal government is doing to our state. I am sharing with you what I told them.
I am outraged by the siege taking place here. I see this for what it is and abhor its impact on families and neighbors in our community. If these efforts by ICE agents were actually removing dangerous criminals from our community to make us safer, then I would support their efforts. But that’s not what this is - and our community is not safer. To be blunt: I want them to stop terrorizing our neighbors. I want them to stop using intimidation and deadly force. I want them to stop trampling on our civil liberties. I want them to leave.
My heart hurts - for Renee Good’s wife and family, for our many neighbors being directly targeted simply because of what they look like or the language that they speak, for the fear and uncertainty driven into our daily lives by these actions. Please know that I stand proudly in solidarity with all of you who are responding to these actions with love, with compassion, and with a helping hand for one another. Thank you for donating your time and money, for checking on your neighbors, for offering rides and food prep and grocery deliveries - for being a remarkable community.
I am honored to serve you on City Council and pledge to do all I can personally and as an individual member of council to advocate for any additional ways to support our community.
